I owned a 1972 Bora chassis #AM117 120 which was a grey market car with the 4.7 liter engine Mine was the silver-blue color with a black interior. I bought it in 1983 for $17000 and sold it 8 years later for $45,000. It was a great car to drive and an easy car to own. Parts were readily available through MIE. As you will note, the engines are stamped for a tipo 107 (Quattroporte) not the tipo 117 Bora. the Quattroporte being a front engine car had the distributor at the front of the engine. this fact brings us to one of the Bora quirks...with the mid-engine configuration, the distributor is tight against the firewall behind the passenger seat. Maserati solved the poor access by having a removable panel behind the seat. To remove the panel you must remove the seat (easy, only 2 bolts). Another quirky thing about the Bora is the Citroen high pressure hydraulic system. The brakes, headlight buckets, adjustable pedal mechanism and the seat tilt are operated hydraulically. If you talk to a hydraulics expert, they will tell you that there are only two kinds of hydraulic systems: those that leak and those that will leak. The brakes take some getting used to as the pedal barely moves from zero to locked. It's like the brakes read your foot force and modulate based on that. The only (minor) issue I had with the brakes was the trying to modulate in the last 1mph. the servo valve couldn't give the tiny bit of pressure so there was a small jerk as the car came to a stop...no biggie , it was just a quirk. regarding the air pump, My car did not have an air pump but it did have the fittings on the headers. if you can see the fittings and there are tubes coming off of the fittings, the air pump should be on the other end. I'd venture a guess that virtually every Bora owner removed the air pump. Another really good thing about the Bora is that they are not known for being rust buckets. many Maserati's in those days had serious rust problems. I looked at a couple of Ghibli coupe's and Khamsin's back in the day and they all had rust issues around the windshield and in the rockers. Two final things...to the successful bidder: when you get the car, the first thing I would do is to take the engine cover off and stand it in the corner of your garage.
