Volvo transmissions in the 1800 series ... the earliest Jensen models (1961-early 63) came with either the M40 4-speed or an optional M41 4-speed plus overdrive. I've rarely seen the M40, but they did sell them. Starting with the Swedish 1800S (1963+), all manual transmissions in the 1800 series were the M41 4 spd/OD combination. \r\n\r\nThe electric overdrive was factory wired to operate only in 4th gear and was manually engaged by the driver with a dash toggle switch (early cars) or a stalk on the right side of the steering wheel (1965-73, in 2 different styles). What you see on this car is the correct engagement stalk for the E/ES cars.\r\n\r\nDetails, details. BaT needs a better Volvo expert doing the write-ups on these cars. The top dash pad with the stitching is a replacement. I had previously restored a 64' 1800S red coupe which turned out beautifully. That car suffered from rust in the \"usual\" places, its where i learned to MIG weld. When I came across the ES at an independent dealer nothing about its condition scared me away. I gave the man what he was asking, trailer'd it home, where it sat in my garage for a year before I began to tackle it. I took it all the way down, save for dropping the rear end, and pulling every piece of glass. I have this all documented in photos, along with stack of receipts for parts and services. Rust repair started with floor pans at driver/pass side foot wells. In the back end the rear hatch seal flange was pretty bad, the rot was cut away and I fabricated and welded in a new one, where needed. Water had made its way down into the rear most valance and was trapped, as a result of inadequate sealing at rear hatch opening. This area also received new metal, with extensive rust proofing and sealing prior to closing it up. After dropping the cross member rust was present in frame member at driver side mount area, this received same treatment as above. Additionally, the battery tray bottom was replaced with a new one.\nThe paint job is about 6 yrs old now, the car presented very well at the 2011 VSA meet, no awards, but my son and I had a ball driving it to Malibu from Arkansas..a 3500 mile round trip.\nThe VIN number does not reflect it is a CA car, the listing states the VIN designates it left the factory as an auto. The conversion to a 4 speed was done correctly with the right parts. Where it is weak is the rear end gearing is matched to the original tranny. First gear is a little tall, but once speeds come up this becomes on a non issue. The rear end could be changed without a great deal of money and effort. Where it shines is at interstate speeds with overdrive engaged, 80mph sees about 2400 rpm. I do not have any history of the cars PO's, and it is not registered in the 1800Registry available online. The new owner can have that honor.\nI do own a 300D which is my daily driver, and a 911SC that only comes out at night, with a full moon, its great to listen to it \"howl\" on the empty streets.
