He was the go-to guy for decades. As most of you know, when it comes to SUs there is rebuilding and kinda-rebuilding. Replacing all the replaceable parts and adjusting them is one thing, but what they usually needed was to have the throttle body remachined where the butterfly bushings live. That requires sending them out and paying some cash. When I had my first BGT, I didn't realize this and fruitlessly struggled to adjust and synch the carbs with the classic tools of the day. This was in the late 80's for me and I was on a really limited budget and saw a mega sale at JC Whitney for the Weber carb and intake manifold set. It was something like $110 and I went for it. The Weber may or may not be an improvement on the dual SUs, but a new Weber downdraft is vastly superior to worn out SUs that leak air through the throttle body. My car ran so much better, was very responsive and would really scoot when you floored it. The last time I checked, these Weber conversion kits had skyrocketed in price, and yes they are not original, but they are dead simple to adjust. So, I'm not advocating Weber conversions, but you might find that it is an interesting thing to experiment with if you happen to run across all of the proper bits at a good price. And it is kudos to the owner for showing it with oil seepage and all. There are a few details that could make this a complete car. There is a boot missing from the gear shift lever. Many removed them, though I was never sure why. The steering wheel center was not red. It was simple black plastic with the MG logo. The engine should be black. It is a pity the underside is black and not body color. There should be dark gray rubber foam above the radiator to close the gap there. Interesting comments about SU carbs. David Vizard did a test of SUs side by side with Webers. The SU performed better throughout the range with one small dip in the mid range, than the Weber. Of course they need to be well set up. I don't know if Unisyns are still being made. I have a couple of the originals, made in the LA area in the fifties and early sixties. They were then sold to another company. New SUs are still available from Burlen in the UK. Bert Skinner designed a beautifully elegant carb in 1910. Best of luck with the sale. My B has had two installed.\n\nThe current one. The one I had is somewhere between my house and the last show. Though there are doubtless differences between 1970, and 1971 cars, I can say with confidence that in 1971, MGBGTs had a foam that filled the gap between the radiator and the blind, filling the gap that is visible in your photographs. As well though yours does possess a rubber shift boot, originally, there was also a vinyl glove that fit over that. When the bodies were fabricated at the works, the cars had a rubber underseal applied(black) and then was subsequently painted body color. The reason I know these things, is that I visited the works in 1970, watched the cars being built, and subsequently bought a B GT new in September of 1971. It came out of the works in June of that year. I am probably unusual here because I had one of these brand new and took many photographs of the car when new. The horn button was not painted with contrasting red as so many are. But that was one from 1971 and the 1970s may be different in that regard. I also had the book which I recall was called, Passport to Service. It had a little metal credit card like thing that would be sent through at the dealer to record all services. I worked in a BL dealership in the mid- to late-1970s. I owned a 1971 MGBGT (or, as I say, midgabidget). can't speak to specific details for each year but I distinctly recall the undercoating being body color; we used to spray another coat of black over it during PDI. I have never seen a red steering wheel hub; mine was black. The trim rings were a dealer add-on, very popular. The period radios were garbage! unless one ripped it out and put in something like a Becker or Blaupunkt. And the first thing one does when balancing multiple carbs is to synchronize the mechanical connections between them. They came out of the factory just tossed together, it was a wonder they even ran. Once the mechanicals are sorted, syncing up while running is pretty easy.\n\nI love this car. I recall wishing I had a glovebox, as the earlier and later cars did. But what a sweet runner. Lots of fun and easy to work on. When I saw it I recognized that it was a very solid car. In the write-up it was mentioned that both front fenders were replaced by the previous owner, not quite true. One fender was replaced because the previous owner hit a deer, the other fender is original as are all the other panels. I found this car while vacationing in the Adirondacks of NY State, it spent all of its previous life in the town of Blue Mountain Lake, so it obviously didn't get allot of F, W, S driving or it would be a rust bucket from road salt. Oh, the reason for selling, I've never owner a convertible, and my wife said I have a limit of one toy at a time. It is obvious that it has been well cared for, even with a couple of very minor mistakes (ie missing filler plates under tail lights) it has been kept well. I'm impressed with the interior (the C pillar covers are a lot nicer than I usually see) and even more so with the engine compartment. The smog equipment was usually the first thing to hit the garbage on these cars, and it's refreshing to see it still present even if inop. \nThe biggest problem with this car, is the green GT from a couple of days ago! It was so nice that this one pales in comparison, and as a result the owner might have trouble seeing his car make a reasonable number. A shame really as this appears to be an honest, well kept split bumper BGT. With half a million B's produced, it is difficult to find \"collectibility\" in a particular car. The 70's were all somewhat collectible in that this was the only year of the split bumpers and last year of the aluminum bonnet, Viola!! He re-bushed the throttle shafts on my Zenith Strombergs last year and they came back perfect. Hemmings did a feature on him a couple of years back, and there are youtube vids posted of him at work. If his name is associated with these SUs, that's all you need to know. \n\nAs far as tuning and balancing these carbs, it's really not difficult once you get the procedure down. And contrary to common myth, a healthy carb doesn't necessarily go out of tune over time. I'd argue that the engine changes and the carb is adjusted to compensate for that change. It may be all the same to some if you have to fiddle with them, but it helped me jettison the stigma of twin British carbs.
