An elderly relative had died in Yugoslavia and Joe went to collect his inheritance. The law there refused to let him take hard currency out of the country, requiring instead that he buy merchandise and ship that home instead. I don't know the exact amount if his inheritance but it must have been considerable. He bought a new Porsche 365 SC, a new Mercedes 220 sedan and a suite of Selmer horns: clarinet, tenor and alto saxophones. Joe's wife didn't drive and his only child was about eight years old. Since this was western Pennsylvania, he knew that the rust worm would get the cars if he drove them so the Porsche became his DD and the Mercedes sat in his garage, driven half a mile twice a year for servicing and state inspection. When I last saw the 220, it was eight years old and had less than 100 miles! Meanwhile, the Porsche had rusted out so badly that it hardly cast a shadow.
