This is cathartic. As I've mentioned after winning the *red* '83 last month, I first fell in love with this model in 1982. I was 9 years old and was tagging along with my father, a somewhat closeted car guy. At least he didn't then - and doesn't now - wear his enthusiasm on his sleeve like I do... at any rate, he was purchasing a 5000 Turbo and a silver (or white?) Quattro was sitting in the showroom. The scale of the fender flares and length of the hood drew me in. It was quite an imposing shape, especially in comparison to the 911 next to it. At the time, I knew nothing of John Buffum or the rallying scene... the Quattro just had presence!\r\n\r\nA decade later, I found myself living in Burlington, Vermont. Audis were omnipresent. 4000s, 80s/90s, 200 wagons, etc. Two local dealers regularly had Quattros for sale - it seemed that they were all were Gobi Beige. I kicked tires throughout the 90s and test drove a half-dozen, almost all priced in the $6,000-8,000 range. Every one had some big issue that held me back... to be clear, I had big issues, too (namely, the \"Series Land Rover.\" But that's another novel for another day).\r\n\r\nAnyway, by '97 or '98, it seemed that the Quattros suddenly disappeared. I'd regularly check Hemmings (the paper version), Autoweek, and the local papers for listings. The internet forums in the early 2000s would show an ad here and there. Eventually, this site and germancarsforsale would put up a link - but only once or twice a year. Now, as has been stated a couple of times below, it seems that there's a new Quattro for sale weekly. I couldn't be happier!\r\n\r\nWhich brings me to my point: this site has done more to satisfy my enthusiasm for cars than any other. Moreso than Automobile magazine (a subscriber since '86), jalopnik (read daily for a decade plus), or any forum, BaT brings me the obscure, the rare, and the attainable. While it was only a 2,800lb car back then, that was heavy compared to other cars. The shocks and springs were soft. If you tried to corner on slower speed, tight corners, the car rolled over a bunch. It didn't wallow, but you had to back up your turns to avoid understeer. What has been done here is sure to make this Quattro turn, and handle better. I asked John Buffam once about his rally car setup. His car weighed 2,200lbs. And his car had BIG Fitchel-Sachs gas struts that were threaded for adjustable coilovers. It allows not only forward traction but retarded wheel slip when shifting down on snow and ice. Living here on a mountain I can attest\r\nto its effectiveness, as well as compare it to Honda \"real time\" and subaru\r\n\"symetrical\" . ABS will release brake action on a non turning wheel, actually\r\nto a point where all wheels are released. Quattro modulates wheel rotation\r\nthru mechanical action of three differentials. You maintain straight line control\r\non steep snow/ice and utilize the brakes only for the final stop. Place two\r\nright wheels in a snow ditch , two left wheel on dry ground, with Honda/Subaru and\r\nattempt power out. You will be pulled forward but further down the ditch. Same experiment with original quattro and it will literally jump up and out of the ditch on to the dry payment. Except the vacuum lockers cuz everyone loves manual lockers! The center Torsen of later systems was arguably superior for varied surfaces. If you know how a Subaru is put together its basically identical, they still use the same layout today on their dwindling manual transmission cars. They use a viscous LSD in the center diff but that has its advantages too. But again nothing special. My moms 80 Quattro unlocked the rear diff over 17MPH, I wonder does the earler Quattro have a speed limit to locked diffs?
