My dad who was a senior developmental engineer for a Boston beltway tech company had been driving Saabs since the 50's. His daily commuter was a serious consideration as we lived in a coastal colonial town in support of his sailing passion but 50 miles from work that was still a two lane country road route. He was aware that Japanese auto makers were up and coming and as the current Saab 96 was getting well into six figure miles he took me along to a fledgling Toyota dealer to check out the Corona. Typical of my Dad, looking at a new car at a dealership quickly turned into studying it from underneath on a lift in the service bay. He spent a lot of time crawling over it, we took it for a test drive and drove off in the Saab. I remember him saying, \"impressive, but I can't buy a Jap car\". A few weeks later he picked up a new 1969 Saab 96 which was the car in which I learned to drive. Before flagging what would be an offensive remark today, some context is valid. In 1969 the end of WWII was only 24 yrs past. That would be 1998 today... Dad was a Marine Corps veteran of the 4th Division and a survivor of the amphibious assault at Iwo Jima. Most of his comrades were casualties. He did see the engineering excellence coming from Japan in the 60s and before he passed he bought a Mitsubishi (Maker of the Zero fighter plane) pickup as a run around utility rig. Cars for me are tags for historical references and an important part of the hobby. I hired a vehicle inspection company called The Lemon Squad to check it out for me and they did a great job of taking photos inside and out and test driving it. I've been thinking about it ever since.
