It was there for the ability to easily drop the skid plate to change the oil. Bruce was pragmatic and used what was available. Why reinvent the hinge? I heard the guy who made them for Bruce drank a little on the job. I used to have a skid plate that had holes drilled that were very far out of alignment. Must have been a good day at work.\r\n\r\nI used to manufacture and sell wide-rim VW wheels. Those front tires are as close to correct as modern tires get today. Unfortunately, they don\u2019t make the exact correct size for this application, so, they are too big and tall and look clumsy.\r\n\r\nFYI: if you really want to achieve achieve the big and little wheel and tire look on Manx, a 14\u201dx6\u201d front wheel with the narrowest 60-series bias-ply tire available is the way to go. Granted, you would have to make the wheel using a cut-down VW center and a 1960s 14\u201dx6\u201d wheel hoop or find a pair of 14\u201ds that were made in the \u201860s. Not easy.\r\n\r\nGLWTA. These were fun beach and runabout buggies that were often second or third cars, especially in coastal communities where the sun was around most of the time. \n\nWe also like the smoothie caps and off-white wheels which add to the vintage vibe. The interior on this Manx is very nicely done and in keeping with the period especially with the matching front and rear pleats, steering wheel, and shifter. \n\n@bugnbox we agree - these are often overdone or painted over or the body shells are highly modified, cut or the fenders shaved over time. This one retains the Manx gel-coat. \n\nThe EMPI muffler and pipes might not be everyone's taste, but it does keep noise down and makes for quieter street use.
