There should NOT be a pinstripe on the rear fender and the pinstripes along the bottom edge of the fuel tank should line up precisely with the pinstripes on the seat cowl. There is no smoke fading as the original bike. These are no small items on a $21K restoration. I own an original '78 Motorsport also, and they didn't have Nikasil cylinders,that didn't happen until '81, your brake master cylinder is under the fuel tank as well unless you bike was modified later. I'm not saying the Motorsport isn't a fine motorbike...it certainly is, but when you say why wouldn't BMW make improvements when having the opportunity, the answer is cost cutting to be more competitive. Why did they stop producing the polished aluminum turn signal housings in '74, and eliminating the Kick start lever in '74....cost cutting, to be more competitive so they could hopefully sell more machines. At the same time they introduced the poorly designed anti-pollution air injection system into the cylinder heads to lean out the fuel mixture, which lowered performance and created hot spots inside the cylinder head.
