There were 3 Milano (Milani?) and a GTV6 as part of the rental fleet and for a monumental sum of $120.00 for the weekend, you could have your pick, with 200 free miles! The GTV was always first choice, but the black Milano was a great second choice. We would roll in at 6:00 PM on a Friday night, drop our deposit and drive away with an amazing Italian sports car, trying hard not to twist the mill to redline as we left the dealer lot. I spent many weekends renting these cars, always with the same MO. Drive from the lot Friday like a civilized customer, rack up 60 or so miles, lift the rear seat cushion, disconnect the speedo/odometer and Bob's your uncle! We throttled those poor cars. And occasionally they let us down. But, by god, when they ran, they were a dream to drive. Balanced, toss-able, nimble and with brakes not found on humdrum rentals of the time, they brought a smile to my face at every turn in. The V6 made incredible noises and you could never get enough underpasses or closed in downtown streets to practice those double clutching down shifts to listen to it spool down. Some, er, interesting comments here, lots of intelligent ones and some great stories. These are a polarising car from a period when Alfa was past its peak of the sublime 105 series.\nThe concept was superb, excellent weight distribution with engine up transaxle in rear with De Dion rear end. The execution however, was not very good. Main problem was that Alfa never made the gear shift work properly, even in the late isostatic cars, something Lancia had nailed in its Flaminias nearly 15 years earlier. Drive shaft vibration could also be a problem. \nThen they developed that glorious little V6 and created the GTV6 which ruined the balance of the Alfetta and brought understeer and heavy steering. Most enthusiasts forgave all of this for the soulful, wailing little V6. The rubbish build quality was harder to forgive, most in evidence in the interior. And yes they rust, not as badly as the early Alfettas, but they still rust. \nIn all, a deeply flawed, but charismatic car that you either get of you don't, its that simple. They are not easy to love, a bit like an Italian opera where you can spend the whole time just waiting for the big aria, then it all becomes worthwhile. The ultimate way to keep your marriage healthy. Mine was very very bad (never buy an Alfa that you have not seen on an elevator hoist). It was rusty as hell, in Alfa rosso and has the Busso V6 in the 3.1 litre Savali (famous Dutch tuner) 200 hp version.\nThe initial purchase price was fair. But it took me several years, a complete restauration, lots of money and a lot of TLC from my dedicated mechanic to get it sorted. \nAnd now: what a car! \nI have been driving it as a DD for almost 2 years, including several trips abroad. Apart from a minor electrical issue no problems at all. \nWhat's not to like? I like a lot:\nThe looks: a real coupe, red, agressive, Italian; I keep looking at it when it is parked in sight. Many women who are not that into cars think at first glance it is a Ferrari. But thankfully it isn't.\nThe driving position: being a homo apiens (long body, short legs) I sit comfortably in the Recaro-type seat; gauges partly covered by the Momo steering wheel; clear view around thanks to non-airbag A-pillars. \nThe driving: the engine sound is indeed addictive; never passing through a tunnel without and opening the windows (electrically) and revving to 5,000 rpm. So far I have never tried the radio in my car. But the engine is also very very flexible: no problems driving around town in 4th or 5th gear without losing accelleration capacity. It starts right away and idles smoothly thanks to the Bosch FI. Steering is very precise; only when parking do you need real truck driver's muscles. Shifting is really effortless and precise like it should be in an Alfa, thanks to the many available modifications to the initial system. Brakes are up to their job, also in the mountains. Ground clearance on mine is minimal and may cause the exhaust to scrape on the numerous Dutch speed-reducing traffic humps and bumps.\nThe ventilation: no A/C on my car, but that is not really a problem in our climate. Moreover it is nice to (re)discover the advantages of open windows (rear ones for permanent flow-through on warm days, front ones additionally when it is really hot); fresh air into the cabin, increased engine sound, more sense of how hot is it outside; only in traffic jams it may become problematic, but then I don't like these anyway. \nUsability: very good. As I said the (front) seats are very comfortable; my wife and I (both retired) easily spend a day's traffic in the car without any back pains or stiffness. Do not put people in the back unless you really hate them; it is kind of claustrofobic and some climbing is needed to get in. But those seats are perfect to put your holiday stuff in which - together with the not too deep buth spacious trunk - make it a genuine GT. In a couple of weeks we are travelling to France and will take our suitcases and garden chairs without any effort.\nMaintenance: these cars need regular maintenance, but parts availabilty is good and prices are fair. I had to do the common fixes; updated head gasket, mechanical timing belt tensioner, guibos, milano style clutch upgrade (done by previous owner), etc. It was a hobby car, but after all of the work the car was incredibly reliable, even more so than my BMW 328i in fact. The bottom end of these engines are good for 250k and when we did a head job at 90k, the cylinder walls looked perfect! I loved the exotic nature of the car--like the Dedion suspension or the direct cam intake valve setup allowing sustained high rpm performance. A highly underated car that has always perplexed me why it has largely been forgotten among auto enthusiats. Strangley, more than a few non-car knowing public would call it a Delorean at the gas station (and mine was red). This example looks like a good runner. Throw a couple thousand at it and I'd bet you'd have no future worries. Now have a Milano which I use for commuting on dry days. The Milano is a much better car on the mean streets of Howard County MD, but I miss the (even greater) visceral thrill of the GTV6 on winding back roads -- the heavy clutch, heavy steering, the vague shifter, the rattling hatch, the non-existent A/C, the poor fit and finish (esp the dash), all forgiven as the engine sang and the car flowed under arches of trees. No wonder the car has always had a limited appeal; it really is a pure driver's car; it doesn't do much else all that well, but does it give a driver a great time. I even came to love the shifting. Now, if I don't have to double clutch in a down shift, I think a car is dull. Anyway (here comes the car illuminati boast), I have owned nearly thirty cars and driven many more, mostly sports cars, or at least sporty, and of all of them, the GTV6 sits among my top three favorites, along with the preternatural Cayman S and the equally (with respect to the GTV6) quirky and underappreciated RX-8. I am happy with the Milano as a DD, but I'm feeling the need for a GTV6 weekend car. A 3.0 maybe because I've a 2.5 Milano. If I had a 3.0 MIlano Verde instead, I'd probably look for a 2.5 GTV6.
