I purchased this 356 29-years ago this weekend and know it inside and out. This is the first time that it has been for sale in that time. For nearly three-years, I have been refurbishing the car with the intent of keeping it as a daily driver but, unfortunately, circumstances change... \r\nAside from missing over-riders, the exterior is very correct and the interior is largely original. It has recently had a glass-out respray in its original Polyantha Red done by Charlie Nestor, a renowned Ferrari restoration expert. I had considered new, leather, upholstery but I like that the seats are original (if in need of repair) and that it feels comfortable. As it is, I wouldn\u2019t be uncomfortable putting the Bulldog pup in the car for a ride. \r\nThe Porsche has always been a driver. In the mid 90s, I made a 1,500-mile round-trip to meet with my grad school advisor once a month for nine months. With the passenger seat removed, it has hauled my carpentry tools to and from jobsites (scratch on the glove-box door, next to the clock, is from my 6-foot level), and on one occasion, hauled 1,800 lbs of compaction stone for a new patio (in bags, over multiple trips). I know that BaT commenters tend to dislike undercoating on these cars but this one gets driven in the rain and in the snow. I use my car, but I care for it very well.\r\n\r\nOriginal engine was removed in 2004, after the value of the early Porsches began to climb. It was running when removed, still turns freely, but I have no means of starting it. Present engine is from a 1969, 912 with an estimated 5,000 miles that has been rebuilt with a big-bore kit. Both engines were built by Tom Bruch of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the gearbox was rebuilt by Vic Skirmants. \r\nIn preparation for the auction, the engine received new points, plugs, plug-wires; a set of new Solex P40 II carburetors from 356 Carburetor Rescue; fresh oil and filter; and a valve adjustment. It starts easily and runs strong. The horns weren\u2019t working so I just purchased two new ones and installed them yesterday. \r\n\r\nCompression test at odometer reading 9,798 showed 145psi on all four cylinders\r\nLeak-down test at odometer reading 10,923 showed a low of 4% and a high of 6.5%\r\nThe present odometer reading is 11,251\u2026no, that is not original mileage.\r\n\r\nI am here to answer any questions. The car is presently in Wheeling, West Virginia, where my dear friend, Ben Schneider, did the photography for this listing and has been helping with the final tweaking for the sale. We are about 30-minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport. He was acting as the chase car and I was signaling him to head back : )\r\nBefore I left the Ohio Valley for worldly travels, Ben and I were fine arts majors at a local college near here in the late 60s. I was driving a 68 Chevelle SS396 in those days and Ben and I would race these roads to school each morning. He had a magenta colored 1957 VW that had been tweaked a little and (damn) he always won...much to my chagrin. I finally sold the Chevelle and bought my first VW...a three-year old Microbus Delux 21-window, sunroof...for $750 from DiNovo Chrysler in Steubenville, Ohio. The problem was that I still had SS396 driving habits and went through 3-engines before I figured out that you couldn\u2019t do 75mph with gear-reduction boxes. There I met Brett Johnson who gave me a lot of tips and a lot of background on the early 356 cars. We actually reassembled his blue 1955 Continental coupe in the ballroom of the HolidayInn there. He trailered all of the parts down to Texas and the 356Registry members assembled it!\nBrett looked at the mirror and, at the time, said that it looked like a factory piece...though he had never seen another like it. He took a lot of photographs and promised to research and include it in his next edition of The 356 Porsche, his guide to authenticity. I have the 1987 edition, published before the Holiday. Perhaps one of 356 owners here has a newer edition of the manual than mine and can look it up? The tinted plastic visors are factory...as is the arm and mount that hold the mirrors. I\u2019m also newly married to a woman whom I had dated as an undergraduate back in the late 1960s.\r\nWe have three cars, my 450 SL, her (new) Audi Quattro, and her 911S with a Sportomatic (she was a Polio survivor from the 1950s). The Porsche needs serviced and I am directed to Bruch Motorwerk by my friends at school. Tom is a gem and we form an easy friendship soon afterward. I have some mechanic skills and really want to dump the CIS fuel injection system on the 911 and replace it with a set of Weber carburetors so, we strike a deal...I work ten or fifteen hours a week (with pay) at the shop and he oversees my work on the conversion. Mostly, I change water pumps on 944s.\r\nI tell Tom of the 356 B I had for a short time when I courted my wife and he tells me to go out to the shed and look at the 356 sitting there.\r\nAs I roll back the door, I see this ancient 356 painted an ungodly orange color with chromed bumpers. Tom says it has transmission problems but the owner isn\u2019t really interested in repairing the car. I look through a box on the back seat and find an original (1956) factory service manual and papers that suggest the car was originally delivered to Mexico...so I\u2019m intrigued. (always wanted to be an Archeologist)\r\nWhen I open the glove box, there is the original owner\u2019s manual, in the red folder, along with the original paperwork for the Blaupunkt radio. The car is cool...if a little odd in that awful orange color with the chrome bumpers...but the owner\u2019s manual in the red folder sealed the deal for me. It was like finding and opening King Tut\u2019s tomb.\r\nFast forward 18-months\r\nI have been negotiating with the owner for, what seems like, an eternity and getting nowhere. He isn\u2019t interested in keeping the 356...but he doesn\u2019t want to sell it either. So...I drive to his home in Muscatine to discuss it in person and his spouse spies the 450SL. Truly love at first sight. So...with pressure from her, we work out a trade for the Mercedes and the 356...I got some cash and the 356, his wife got the SL.\r\nNot five minutes later, at the stop sign at the end of his street, I get rear-ended by a Buick wagon. The Porsche is bent, and I\u2019m angry...but the driver gets out of his car (dressed in black) and tearfully apologizes, with his family in the car, saying that they were just coming from his mother\u2019s funeral and he was distracted. Five minutes later, we were both crying over his mother and the car.\r\nThat started (and funded) the first restoration of this car. The impact broke the license light (which was out of stock at every parts supplier for the next two-years) and pushed the panel in about an inch. It pulled back into shape and required no new panels. In the case of my car, when it was restored in 1989/1990, Lee applied a two-stage base coat/clear coat. It is my understanding that the clear coat is difficult to blend. When I was a painter, in the 60/70s, cars didn\u2019t have two-stage paints unless it was a custom...so I don\u2019t have a lot of first-hand experience with the actual application. \r\nIf your car has minor damage and still has the single-stage paint, I would find a good body shop that has experience with these cars and just have it touched up. If your car has already been restored, I wouldn\u2019t take it to bare metal as it would be unnecessary.\r\nIf you car is unrestored and if you have the car stripped, it isn\u2019t simply the cost of the refinishing that you have to contend with...the glass should come out...which necessitates new window and door seals. The chrome spears, light bezels, hood spear, etc, will likely look shabby against new paint so those should be replaced as well.
