To the right of the gearshift (pics 71, 74), there are 2 switches: the front one is the O/D, rear one is Pwr/Eco (unnecessary raising shift points in Pwr). 4th gear cruising in this was about 2050rpm @60 as I recall, with our common highway MPG in the high 30\u2019s. Great highway car!\n\nAlso while the swinging center vents were cool, they were not included on the DX (just LX and GT). \n\nI remember these being so-so for power, but the balanced handling was an amazing departure from the domestic stuff. Here\u2019s some things the new buyer will want to know. The 626\u2019s from 1983-1986 were mostly bullet proof. Some head gaskets and carburetor issues on the 83-85 models. The 1986 was perfect. Than came the 1987\u2014\nI was in training for the 1987 model year launch. The instructor announced that the 1987 626 was the first to offer a new type of auto trans. Mazda branded it the ECAT. Electronically controlled auto trans. He said it was revolutionary, bullet proof, fantastic. Well, I think that\u2019s what they said about the titanic!! To date, this is still the worst trans I\u2019ve ever seen. If they shifted at all , second gear would toss you through the windshield. The solenoids would engage at the wrong times putting the car in 2 gears at once. This was happening as new cars were coming to the dealer. They were so bad the mechanics referred to these as \u201cECAT-POS-MOUSE. They were only used 1 year. While the \u201888 was worse, it was a completely different trans. I don\u2019t know if in subsequent years Mazda was able to fix them of if anyone can work on them today as I jumped to Lexus in 1989. Other than the trans, they were a great car. It\u2019s an easy swap to manual if so inclined.
