His stories were legendary and he was nominated for the CMH twice but Patton mixed both. This motorcycle probably has interesting stories as well. These were 45 inch (750cc) like the 640 Scout. The government asked H-D and Indian for 1,000 test bikes with hand clutch, foot shift, shaft drive, rear suspension, and cylinders sticking out in the air for better cooling. They expected the war might have stayed in Africa longer or expanded into the middle east, so they wanted a better off road bike. Basically they wanted a BMW flathead 750. So Indian more or less turned the 640 engine sideways, and Harley's engine was a copy of a BMW flathead metric for decimal, although they didn't admit it. Indian made 960 841s and H-D I think made 1,040 of their XA model. Despite low production I don't think these sell for much more than a H-D WLA, which is the most common U.S. WW2 bike now. They made over 80,000 of those. Reason is these shaft bikes were not too popular after the war. Civilians wanted conventional V-twins. Ideally 74 inch ones but 45s would do. The 640 Scout, 45 inch, was extremely popular for converting into a fancy Sport Scout. Full skirt fenders but a rigid frame, cleaner than the Chief or last model Sport Scout that had plunger rear suspension. Some liked the lighter weight compared to a 74 inch Chief, and Indian did not make 45s after the war except race bikes with magnetos. So the shaft drive bikes are out there. 640s in original military trim, almost never. I have one. Production was less than 5,000 and I think most stayed in the U.S. Canada used them too. Our military didn't want two different machines to have to service. So H-D got the big contracts. \r\n\r\nThe 741 was a militarized Junior Scout. 30.50 cubic inch. It looks much like a 640 but there are six obvious differences if you know what to look for. I think production of the 741 was around 45,000, with nearly all going to British Commonwealth countries especially New Zealand and Australia. They wanted 500 cc maximum bikes. 741s in the U.S. are probably all imported from there. The U.S. wanted 45 inch engines so the bikes could go a lot faster than jeeps and trucks. An old timer I traded parts with told me a common upgrade in the 50s and 60s was to make a 37 inch 741 by using a 45 flywheel.
