Pictures of the frame, including rust through and poorly done repairs, do cause concern. These frames were not robust to begin with and much of the strength of the car comes from the inner body structure, which is welded to the frame in an early form of uni-body design. Frame replacement requires complete disassembly and replacement of the entire inner body structure. The body panels than fasten to the inner body structure. Once apart, most other parts also require refurbishment or replacement. Kaching, Kaching.\r\n\r\nFortunately, most parts are available as reproductions. And they can be lovely cars when done right. The '53 was much faster with 143mph at 4200 rpm with the original transmission and diff. It could have gone faster with the right fuel and tuning. The '55 was geard much differently, but still went over 100mph easily. The frame is very hard to repair; I bent mine, and I could not find anyone who would repair it! It was buckeled at the rear botom A frame atachment.\r\n\r\nThe '53 was impossable to drive in the city because of a very heavy clutch and a gear ratio that would give you 55mph in first. The '55 wasn't as bad, but both had very hot interiors! My sneakers melted to the floor in the '53. The exhaust is right under the drivers feet. I always had issues with overheating in the city on hot days, even after I had the radiator rodded, and cleaned.\r\n\r\nWiring was an issue as well. The rubber insulation rotted and fell off causing shorts. I got in trouble with the law several times because of lights not working.\r\n\r\nBoth cars needed better then 107 octane fuel! That was the highest I could get at the time. One would need to use avation fuel or race gas in them today. Ya! I owned them when 100 octane was regular! If 5 bolt diff you could remove the 1st gear cut out and have as beneficial as a bn2 4 speed plus 2 over drive. Pick away at some of the other crapola over time while you are driving it.\n\nOf course, this is based on a couple things, first, that you can be happy with a car on the lower end of the condition/value spectrum and two, that the rot through on the frame is limited to that one area under the battery.
