I bought my 66 at 18, after only helping friends in high school work on their V8 powered this, that, and the next thing. No air cooled experience. I found that what Chilton's lacked, How to Fix Your VW for the Complete Idiot filled the gaps (it was a gonzo/combat repair manual). I learned to adjust the valves, set dwell, check the gap on the spark plugs, and come to love the Uni-Syn. That all said, this is about the best driver level 912 I think I've ever seen here on BaT! It's a real honest car, and the seller has been very active in this auction. Only some twit would want to change this into a show car (unless it's for a driver class) when it is meant to be a driver. and kudos to the seller for using this every day (funny thing, my 912 seller was moving on to a Targa, as well)! I wouldn't worry too much about the paint, because it doesn't affect speed into the apex! And one last thing, there isn't the electronic sensors, computers, etc, of a ten plus year old car, that when they die, you better be on a first name basis with used-part reseller! (Maybe even sending them a bottle of their favorite libation every Christmas). Working on a 912 is simple when compared to the 911, it weighs about 300 pounds less, brakes and tires never get torn up, and you can roll-start by yourself on a flat road. I still have mine after 30 years. It was an actual barn find. I agree with others on the John Muir 'How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive - A Manual of Step by Step Instructions for the Compleat Idiot'. I got that when I bought my first car, a Karmann Ghia. The engines are very similar as far as adjusting the valves, etc. There is also the orange cover 912 book that has the info particular to the 912. I have Webers on mine also. They can be finicky. I've rebuilt them a few times over 30 years. Also have a Uni-Sync for dialing them in. The best I've had them synced up though is by ear. An old mechanic was looking mine over one day as I was not having great luck with the syncing. He took a length of hose and placed one end by his ear and the other near the throat of each carb. He then fiddled with the air mixture screws, blipped the accelerator. Repeat. It ran perfect after that. I've been tuning them that way ever since. Helps to have good ears and hopefully no backfiring back through the carbs.
