When I test drove the car before purchasing, the speedo wasn't working and, prior to my purchase, the PO had his mechanic put in a new speedo cable. The PO owned the car for 13 years and I have no idea how long the cable wasn't working. The mileage could be 129K or, it could be that the speedo stopped working at 29K and wasn't working for years, leaving mileage as an unknown. I have bills of sale from 3 owners ago and 2 owners ago. The four known owners were all located in Maine and the car has an old metal dealer emblem from a defunct foreign car dealer that was in Maine. If this car had been driven year round here it likely would have rusted away long ago so I assume it has always been a seasonal car. At 42 years old, it's not outside the realm of possibility that it has 129K or more, but our driving season is short and the prior owner of 13 years didn't drive it much as he had multiple toys. As to the switch of speedometer, the needle wasn't working quite right when I got it so I sourced a complete set of used gauges from another car and swapped in the speedo. I have since identified that the bouncing needle was because the new speedo cable end wasn't big enough to mesh well with the needle opening. I believe the original speedo will also work fine now that I tweaked the cable end. The complete set of extra gauges is going with the car. One day I'd be that cool too. \r\n\r\nSo a year or so later and I was driving a very tired shit blue TR4 I paid $500 for with money I made working the drive through at Arby's. The old TR4 ran on bias plys so worn the cords showed, the seat foam was long gone and I loved it. Unfortunately it had the annoying habit of occasionally skipping time due to an incredibly worn timing chain so I got real good at ripping the front of the engine apart and fixing that. A new chain and sprockets was a luxury way beyond my new after school gig in a bicycle shop. \r\n\r\nCollege came and went as did a bunch more Triumphs, a move to CA and even a stint with Moss Motors in the early '90s and though I haven't owned anything from Britain in a long time seeing this auction car stirred up more than a few very happy thoughts.
