It costs at least $30K to restore one of these yourself. The notion that $5,000 is \"too much cash\" for such a car is absurd. Outside of identical drivetrain, the MG Magnette has nothing in common with the Riley 1.5. I love both of these models and own a Magnette. The Riley is a much smaller car. The Magnette is easy to modify: mine has MGB 1800 engine, Rivergate/Nissan 280Z five-speed transmission, and MGB 3.9 rear end. No hot rod, but it cruises effortlessly at 75-80 mph on the interstates. It stops quickly with front disc brakes: MGA steel-wheel front hubs and rotors with MGB calipers and Jason Green conversion brackets. I also have Saab front seats (wife has bad back) and A/C (wife is a wife). I like to keep these cars as original as possible, while making them comfortable drivers. Their elegance - particularly the wood and leather interiors - promises a higher level of performance than the original drivetrain could deliver. The MGB engine is almost indistinguishable from the 1500 original. If you want one, there are three primary options: (1) the Ford Sierra kit from Hi Gear Engineering in the UK - available in the US for a paltry $4000; (2) an MGB O/D conversion involving massive sheet-metal surgery very unattractively, and very obviously, expanding the transmission tunnel; and (3) a Rivergate/Nissan 280Z 5-speed conversion, designed for the MGB. I did the very first one of these and then did a second. The average cost of the two was around $1700, it fits in the existing tunnel, and for a subsequent purist owner, it is totally reversible. I liked his so much I bought '57 \nZB ( not Varitone) in 1967 for use while I was in university in Stafforshire, England where they used to have harsh white winters. The car never let me down, was easy to maintain and was the car of choice to take on country pub crawls. The starting handle came in useful when the battery was not strong enough to start the engine. Mine had a radiator muff and flaps which was effective to achieve fast warms ups to get the heater working. If I had room I would bid for this fine example. One light comes on and then the other along with the first. I thought this was a bit odd when I restored my 56 ZA 25 some years ago. You may be able to source a different switch, but all the ones I have seen are the same. I have not used my auxiliary lights in many years.\r\nHaving driven in 110 degree weather at speed for hours I can attest the engines can handle it fine. however the Z Magnette's do get hot inside in the summer. Insulating the transmission tunnel, lower fire wall and drivers floor helps a lot to lower interior temperatures. You cannot restore one to this level for that, and it is a truly distinctive car. With proper care and non-abusive driving, it is mechanically bulletproof. With a few bolt-in modifications, the Magnette can be configured into a quiet, comfortable, modern turnpike cruiser - as I have done with mine. My Magnette is still essentially all-MG - in all respects except transmission. It just borrows a few tricks from the MGB design team. Whether you want a trailer queen or a running, driving touring car, this car is worth the money. The closest British relative is the much-more-expensive, more tedious, Jaguar Mk II, a really lovely car, much more commonplace - except on the highways where you can't find them except inside trailers. The Magnette is far simpler and cheaper to maintain, at least as elegant, much more distinctive and rare, and can be driven without fears of mysterious expensive faults. No-brainer! This is a wonderful example of a little-known, rare, British car. MG? Did they build saloons? Yep, they always did, but this is the affordable one they really got right. The original Magnette radiator, about 2-3/4\" thick (if I remember right), rests quite tight to the bonnet latch platform - no room for a condenser. One of the pictures in this ad shows this. It seems to be about the 33rd picture down from the top of the photo gallery. I know of two solutions: one of our members moved his engine back enough (about one inch) - something I would not want to do on a finished restoration like this car. My solution was to have a custom aluminum radiator built for me. The core is one-inch thick and it cools better than the original while leaving ample room for the condenser. Vintage Air does not make a condenser of appropriate size for the Magnette radiator (20 X 20, I think). I found one 16 X 20 at Nostalgic Air - not quite as tall as I'd like, but it works fine. The evaporator (Vintage Gen II Compac) fits well and is totally out of sight (original heater removed). I see no advantage to using one that fits an MGB (I also put A/C in my B/GT). The compressor bracket kit can be used, but I don't like the fan-belt routing designed into any of the currently available kits. If you tighten the belt enough so it doesn't slip on the compressor, it will tear up your water-pump bearings. My home-built design avoids that problem. \n\nI too plan on being at GT42 with my Magnette. The ZA of course with the standard, small rear window and the ZB with the later large window.\n\nI'm surprised no one has commented on either the comfort of \"driveability\" of these cars. As noted, the interior is \"upmarket\" and shows it - this is what cars SHOULD look like inside, not acres of plastic! This was a \"middle class\" car and only became own-able by the by plebs like me when the rust worm had taken their toll. \n\nAmused by all the \"little car\" comments - sure \"little compared with a suicide door Lincoln but not in their domestic market - an A30 or Standard 8 is a \"little car\" - not a Magnette!\n\nBack to the \"drivability\" aspect. These cars really do handle quite well (thanks to the suspension design, shared with the siblings from the BMC badge engineering range) and I raced my ZB. Sadly, Magnettes were favoured for UK short track (and there were a LOT of short tracks in the UK in the 60s and 70s - DAMHIK) racing because of their handling and general performance. This greatly reduced the number of vehicles for later restoration and which makes them relatively rare in their home market. Their ability to go round corners is in another world to that of comparable cars here in the USA from the same time period. Think of them more as the \"Step-down Hudson\" of their day in the UK.\n\nLastly, the comparison that was made with the Mk1 and Mk2 Jags doesn't match my experience (these days I have two Jags in the garage, so I speak from a modicum of experience). Both marques rust nearly as bad as a Fiat - OK, perhaps not \"nearly as bad\" but at least readily and expensively. Both were somewhat overbuilt which is why they lasted as long as they did, even when very down-at heal with a frayed extremities. Both have great interiors (that can be punitively expensive to restore). Both have robust engines but the Jag has the advantage of having an engine designed and intended for heavy limos - and later used for armoured military fighting vehicles - so it is inherently longer lasting between overhauls but those overhauls will cost much more than any \"B\" engine. The Jag will be faster - a lot faster - but will cost more to buy but also will appreciate faster because the Magnette generally flies under the radar of car collectors. These are very different vehicIes, so no one should purchase the MG thinking they will \"almost\" have the performance (and prestige?) of the Jag, because while the former is an excellent vehicle, it would be way overmatched against the latter. Note that I also happen to be a fan of MGs, so I have a foot in both camps, thus I think I can be objective - no disrespect intended towards the excellent Magnette, which I'd suggest is very underappreciated.
