The only complaint I have is the rear end ratio makes it rev a bit higher than I'd ideally like with the 3 speed auto. On the positive side, if you want to do a 700R4 swap mated to the original engine, the rear end ratio is ideal and you end up with another gear and improved shift ratios. As far as reliability, if it's a sorted car to begin with and you drive it and use it, it should stay that way with fairly minimal maintenance. I see lots of originality in this car. Cons: the door edge guard. Yes, helps prevent dings, but I'd remove them, have the holes filled and blend the paint repair. At the same time, I'd remove the \"leaper\" on the hood. Wasn't there from the factory and screws up the looks. The foams in the seats, both the seat bottoms and head rest look finished. I wonder if the leather and its seams are strong enough to reuse? I see upper and lower front A-arm suspension bushings are ready for replacement. Toggle switch on the center console? The a/c system on the series 1 XJ doesn't move enough air. OK to keep one cool if less than 85F outside. I eventually added a rear trunk unit to my XJ and solved that issue. On the rear boot lid chrome trim - one photo shows the chrome strip which belongs above the license plate is laying below, in between the trunk and the bumper. Better grab it before it disappears! The clips to reattach the lower chrome license plate trim to the lid are available through antique car part dealers. The Federalized US delivered cars came with non-adjustable mixture needles in the Stromberg carbs - the good news is one can get adjustable needle parts from other Strombergs to help smooth out the idle. \nPros: - where's the rust? wow! Original dash top - has the original style speaker grill in the center - can't find one today. These short wheel base XJ's with proper suspension drive like nothing else. Very cool. Described as controlled smoothness. One can really feel the independent rear suspension working. Car was way ahead of its time. These cars are finally getting recognized and starting to appreciate in value. Parts availability - plenty of access to almost all parts. Not too pricey either. Yes, a conversion to a 700r4 would be awesome, but the BW Model 12 is an extremely robust/stout transmission.\nOverall, this is a great machine. Could be a great candidate to campaign JCNA Preservation Class. If one wants to give it a light restoration, rework the seats with original leather, remove the dash facia - it is flat - run it through a planer to remove old veneer, install new veneer and finish. First off, since my seller was a regular and valued BAT poster, I took him at his word when he said his Jaguar mechanic had gone through the car. However, after purchase it took over $5000 to fix any number of issues that a competent mechanic should have noted. So don't view any BAT auction or the sellers as anything other than what they are- just another auction site selling cars that may well hide problems and therefore must have a PPI. And unless proven otherwise, the cars are sold by sellers who are trying to move iron. However, the seller's description of his XJ6 was truthful in the most important area- the car was rust free. Rust free is far and away the most important criteria of these cars. Everything else is easy to fix and relatively inexpensive. and rust free is exceedingly unusual. Looks wise the Series 1 is the XJ6 to own, and you will be gratified by the comments you get every time you take it out. Surprisingly for me, they come from young people as well as the expected comments for my generation. The driving dynamics are amazing for a car of this vintage. The short wheelbase of these early cars makes a big difference. The ride and the handling are extraordinary. The only letdown is very light steering feel. I may eventually go to a different steering from a later car, but the feel was markedly improved by going to a smaller diameter wheel from a V12 E Type. The XK engine is a wonderful, albeit heavy unit, and I love driving a car with the same engine that won Lemans outright five times! Comfort wise the only annoyances are the inadequate air conditioning (I would love the details on a trunk mounted unit since the trunk is enormous!) and some wind noise from the vent windows. Once I got the car truly sorted, the reliability has been perfect, but as has been said, they need to be driven. As long as the weather is good, mine has become a daily driver. And yes, remove some of the added trim, especially that \"thing\" on the hood. Lastly,I have owned and driven many cars from the era, and have almost always been disappointed at how old they feel (and this includes a 330GTC, Daytona, and the Mercedes and BMWs of the era). The only ones of this vintage don't feel ancient to me are well set up 911's and my XJ6. The trimmers way back when did a great job of stitching, with headrest material being very robust.\r\n\r\nI've yet to make the repair, but as acquired my well kept SI had some split seat leather on bolsters. Headliner always sags as the adhesive dries out and fails, leaving you looking like you're wearing a burnoose as you slouch in your seat to avoid its annoyance\u2014also addressed here. Headrests shrivel from heat, and need to be restuffed. Dash fascia always cracks into a fine mosaic-like patina\u2014not objectionable like the long cracks and delamination in the Series 3 cars\u2014but not the most difficult fix for the DIYer. Unnecessary dealer-laden adornments for which they jacked up the price by hundreds (bonnet leaper, check; chrome wheel arches, no (whew!), body-side moulding, check. This last one is a chronic criminal assault on these cars and why anyone would think those tasteless strips of aluminum and vinyl look better than the unsullied body as penned by Lyons\u2014even at the risk of a subtle door ding\u2014was clearly not alumni of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. This is a costly fix, to fill those holes and re-shoot the flanks at least. Blending rarely succeeds. The AC working at all is a good thing, and unless you do drive to Art Center (or anywhere in So Cal), it's probably adequate. Barely.\n\nI've owned these SWB saloons, as well as the coupes. While the 2-door iteration is lovely, I'd have to opine that in this very rare instance, the four-door wins the design award. An XK engine with A/T, A/C and early US smog equipment was not the one that won LeMans. You go from worrying about reliability, repair bills and overheating to just enjoying the car. It's not like the Brits thought American power was beneath them. The Jensen Interceptor had an American engine so did many Rovers.
