The is a Series III, 4/4 that would have had disc wheels, drum brakes, and a 1000 cc Anglia engine. It was purchased for restoration about 30 years ago by a good friend of mine for restoration and has been in our club since then. He was an older gentleman and quite a Morgan aficionado already owning two other cars. This vehicle was taken down to the bare chassis to be restored. One club member supplied the 1600 xflow expertly rebuilt and mildly tuned as installed now. I did a good deal of the metal work, new rear deck, probably quarter panels and welded in repair of any rust damage. The outer rails of the chassis were rusty so new rails were fabricated and welded in using the existing cross members that were not rusty. The car was converted to disc brakes at the front with wire wheel hubs so a change over to wire wheels could be done. Any suspect timbers were replaced at this time by the owner\u2019s son who was an expert wood worker. Finish body and paint was done by a local concern, as was upholstery. The owner enjoyed driving this car for a number of years, I think liking it better than the new Plus 8 that he had recently acquired. I drove it many times and enjoyed the push pull shifter that was unique to Morgan that it had in those days. I\u2019m sure most would prefer the five speed that it has now though. When the owner passed on about twenty years ago, the car stayed in the family for a time. Ultimately it was sold to another club member in the area and eventually to the current owner. This car was not a trailer queen, it was driven and enjoyed. Morgan used the small Ford engines in the late 50's and thru the 60's and beyond in different configurations in the 4/4 series. This car started life with 997 Anglia engine, first little English Ford OHV engine, that went to 1340, 1500, and 1600. All the same block just increased displacement. It was common to upgrade to the next bigger motor as it was essentially a bolt in modification. Lotus used the 1500 block and fitted it with overhead cams for the Elan, Cortina etc. This car has the 1600 cross flow Kent engine as it is known. Used in the later Cortina, Capri, Fiesta and even in our Pinto. It is also the famous engine used in the open wheel Formula Ford race cars. Probably around 90 h.p. in this tune, but only a guess. The original Anglia engine was about 39 h.p. hence you can see the reason it was converted to disc brakes. About the vinyl upholstery; the gent who restored this car was interested in using it and frankly vinyl does hold up better in open cars that might get wet or sit in the sun. Also vinyl trim was standard in the 4/4 series and that is likely what it came with originally as did I would have to say most of them. The car has been in one spot for about a week and there are no drips on the floor. I would say that the seal is weeping. I have never noticed a spot from there.\r\n\r\nAs for the wipers, the motor is in place but not wired, I have the rack and transmissions (see photos 221,222 and 223). The previous owner thought it looked much better without them and I absolutely agree. I keep the windscreen coated with Rain-X and have yet to be caught in the rain. It is a rather simple system and I would think that at worst, it may need a motor...if you wanted to reinstall the system. The firewall looks cleaner without the wiring, as well.
