They are wonderful cars to drive and with the blower it should keep up just fine. Everyone loves these cars and you get a lot of attention wherever you go.\n\nA few things of note:\n\nIt has a VW steering box, which is a common mod for the original, often wayward, steering. However the gearing is much lower on these so you lose the responsive feel of the original which some, including myself prefer.\n\nThe rust on the battery box near the fuel pump should be attended to promptly. Hopefully it\u2019s not too bad yet.\n\nAlso the fuel line out the top of the pump looks like a bodge. Best to get a steel reinforced line with brass fittings to avoid a disaster. The incoming line also looks like it is overbent which should be fixed.\n\nThe air cleaner assembly looks like it was fashioned from a TD intake. I would think a simple pancake filter behind the carb would be less bother.\n\nThe wood dash is an upgrade. The factory dash for this year would have been rexine vinyl. However it looks beautiful and is as the car was originally designed.\n\nAnyhow all minor nitpicks in the big scheme. My car had been used for racing in Australia and came complete with a race log. Suspecting the ladder frame had endured some abuse, measured it from the ends from opposite corners and found it was over two inches out. Using a set of come-alongs, pulled the frame straight, welded in extra gussets, and powder coated it. Replaced the wooden cowl and door posts which had rotted. Rebuilt the XPAG engine and tranny. Welded in patches where the mirror bases had trapped moisture and caused rusting. Painted exterior in red and installed new tan interior from Moss. As the car was restored to original, it had no signal lights, one central brakelight and no bumpers. Riding on the left side terrifiedmy wife and she refused to ride in it. Although it would do 50 MPH at cruise the steering was very vague, you dont really steer just sort of guide it back on track with gentle nudges. The narrow 19 inch tires follow faint ruts so does better when left alone. One best of class in a Maryland show and sold it to buy a 1960 Healey 3000. Got $14,000 for it in 1994. The writer who quoted a price of over $100K is wildly optimistic as these old MGs havent really appreciated as wildly as the Etypes or big Healeys! As with most things that look \"right\" it is in the lines. They are not only classic they are graceful as an XK120 coupe is graceful and some custom bodied Bentley's. At twelve years old I and thousands of other boys read the Red Car by Don Stanford. It told the story of a teenager who stumbled upon a wrecked TC and learned the subtle and exotic secrets of sports cars. A whole generation impressionable kids were smitten with or deceived by the English sports car myth. It could have been titled \"The Red Peril\". Suddenly my attempts at speed with brick shaped soapbox derby cars on nearby \"suicide\" hill were eclipsed by the seeming sophistication of lithe and exotic foreign roadsters.\r\n\r\nOver the last sixty years I have owned any number of sports and race cars; all loved and used for their intended purpose. Some were sold because others began appreciate their qualities and they became too valuable for a fellow with three sons to get through college. Others left because something more interesting or faster became available. However through it all the allure of the TC hardly wavered. It seemed every ten years or so the lust became great enough that I began shopping. However each encounter seemed to find me looking at a car with needs and some things that I just couldn't overlook, like the \"automatic\" lane change feature. But God they were lovely.\r\n\r\nThere is a great deal to be said for things that just look right. I find that over the years the cars that I have kept ie, aforementioned XK 120coupe and Arnolt Bristol roadster have lines I admire along with their other attributes. So it was that recently the need for a TC again began to seem reasonable for now I knew how to correct the most vexing of their tendencies. That is the proclivity to go where they want rather than continue in a straight line. The original steering boxes were probably good for some number of miles before wandering became a way of life. Much like a hound I adopted as a boy. The cure is a VW or Datsun 210 steering box and making sure the rest of the front suspension has no slop. The argument against the VW box is that it takes three or so turns lock to lock in place of the original quick 1 & 1/2 turns of the standard issue. The Datsun box as near as I can tell seems to be about two and a bit turns. (I'll know for sure this weekend) The other problem is the rear axle ratio is I believe 5.12 to 1 meaning that poor little long stroke XPAG, all1,250cc's of it, has a piston speed approaching a V2 rocket. The solution is a more modern 5 speed trans also supplied by a Datsun 210. A bit of extra power would be nice too. I love the look of the period blowers and a 7psi boost that 54 bhp should approach 70 to 75 bhp. Now if every other worn suspension piece has been brought up to standard you have a relatively quick little package that goes down the street without requiring lightning reflexes.\r\n\r\nAs you have surmised by now I am now the proud owner of a 1949 MG TC. Best of all I can leave my coveralls and rollaway respectively hanging on a hook and pushed against the wall of my shop. I purchased the car last week from a fellow who has been servicing MG's for over thirty years. He is semi retired now and has limited his business to building engines and transmissions. This TC was a hobby of his over the last eight years and the above mentioned Datsun pieces plus a 1,380cc warmed over XPAG moves it along rather smartly. Fortunately I live in an area with lots of two lane coastal roads with nearest freeway more than twenty miles off.\r\n\r\nMost things in life can be fixed if you don't mind putting in a bit of effort, that 17\" steering wheel I can hardly get my legs under is the next to go. Hopefully I haven't upset any purists and equally I hope I have encouraged someone to take the plunge.
