The motor that came with it, was seized, and when we pried it apart, had lots of racing bits in it.. not what we wanted. We looked at a huge pile of cores from Seven enterprises and a few other places, to get the best bits possible. The crank is .010 under, so has at least 2 more rebuilds in it, the pistons are .030 over I believe. Crank was nitrided, polished and balanced, the cam is a stock grind from a new core, 100% of the consumables (bearings, pings, rings, pistons, fasteners, mounts, valves springs, oil pressure relief valve etc.) we repaced with new, all the reciprocating bits (pistons, pins, rods) were balanced, rocker shaft re-bushed etc. All the machine work was done by the old Marin Speed and Machine, the head has hardened seats. All the accessories were rebuilt or replaced new, including the Carbs that were done, twice, once by a local shop, the proper work by Joe Curto. The only non-original stuff is we put a billet main pulley/dampener in because we could not find a stamped one that didn't wobble, it has a modern oil filter and aftermarket air filter (stock is included and it should be used... car runs better with it). It has a rare original tach drive, on the stock generator. All this extra fussing gives us a nice smooth running engine with stock horsepower... so was probably not worth doing other than it was great fun. These MK2's share their chassis with the MK1 Bugeye/Frogeye. They have the same Quarter Elliptic rear leaf springs that give the early Sprites such wonderful handling. This car here has the correct 15 leaf rear springs, rebuilt lever-arm shock absorbers, and an added front sway bar. That is the best configuration for the Sprite. Those 3.5 inch wide steel wheels weigh only 11 pounds: lighter than most aftermarket allows. They are best with 145/80x13 vintage style tires such as Pirelli CA67's or Vrederstein Sprints. I changed from 155/80x13 to Vrederstein 145x13's and it was like changing from rubber boots to dancing shoes.\r\nThe 1962 MK2 Sprites had close ratio smooth-case gearboxes and later 1964 MK2's had the close ratio ribbed-case box. The car here has a replacement ribbed-case box. While it is not original, it is far superior with better synchromesh components. \r\nThis Sprite has its original front drums brakes. I have experience with both drums and discs. The drums weigh much less than the discs and their calipers. If the drums are kept in good condition, they perform well. Yes, drums are prone to fade, so that is a consideration if the plan is to drive long distances in areas with steep hills. The 1959 Huffaker race car for sale here on BAT uses these same front brakes, but with finned alloy drums. A swap out to disc brakes is a major undertaking, requiring replacement of the front uprights, kingpins, hubs, rear brakes, and master cylinder.\r\nThis MK2 Sprite here has impressive fit and finish of its doors and hood. The interior vinyl is done to a high standard. I chuckle when I see plush carpets in early Sprites, since they originally came with rubber mats and a small amount of carpet over the rear axle area.\r\nThese early side-curtained cars are true roadsters. I smile every time I sit in mine and look at the windshield bolted to the front cowl.
