If you have never driven an M100, you don't know Lotus or an M100. It is simply a great car. By far the most money Lotus ever spent developing a car. They wanted to make the best handlin front wheel drive car that drove so that you did not know whether it was front wheel or rear wheel drive. They succeeded. John Miles, ex F1 driver and Lotus engineer said at the time it was the \"quickest way between two points on a twisty road\". Yes, in hindsight they should have made a more conventional \"Miata\" type car and the did about 5 years later with the Elise, but the Elan is one of the great under appreciated cars ever to be made. The Elise was developed under new ownership by Romano Artioli, who was very involved with its development and named after his grand daughter. It never would have been made under GM ownership as it would have competed with other cars in the GM line. (Corvette for one) And you also have to understand that the M100 development was used to develop lots of cool things they used on later GM cars ( ahem..Corvette again) and wrote that expense off to Lotus. Below 80 mph the M100 is just a car. Above 80 mph the M100 Elan turns into a Lotus. I have a Caterham, 3 Elans and 2 Elises. all light to the touch cars. When I went to Burdick Lotus in Syracuse NY in 1991 to take an Elan out for a test drive, I walked in the dealership. Told the salesman why I was there and he throws the keys to me and says. \"Make a right of the driveway, go around the block and come back\". As I was driving the car, I noticed it was heavy, steering was heavy. Not like the 73 Elan I was used to driving. I only got up to about 40 or 50 mph. I did not see anything special about the handling. (but I was going only 40 mph) I went back to the dealership and said to myself, I think I will buy a Caterham. Which I did. In 1999 I put on the Lotus Owners Gathering at Watkins Glen. A friend of mine that had an M100 from new convinced me to trade cars for the weekend. He took my Caterham, I took his M100. Driving that car for the weekend was a revelation. At high speed, or negotiating twisty roads the car lightens up. Steering lightens up. The car is FAST. I realize this car really handle better than any Lotus I have ever had. This IS a Lotus. I just never got that feeling 8 years earlier. I guess, for me, the Elan is just a sports car at slow speed. Like any Miata, Porsche, BMW. I say that with a very small caveat. They are a 27 year old car and no current Lotus dealer is going to have a clue if something really strange happens. Now I have only heard of that happening once in all the owners I know and that was back in 1994 or so. But keep in mind it is a stock Isuzu motor out of a Impulse Turbo. Any good mechanic familiar with that car and motor can fix it. I know a lot of M100 owners. We have 5 or 6 in the LOONY club alone, Including \"Blackie\" the very first M100 brought into the country. Parts are getting hard to find. Front end, rear end, fenders and rear hubs are getting impossible to find. Especially here in the states. When I rear ended a Chevy Malibu, I had to have a company I buy parts from in the UK source some of the replacement parts from the UK. And they were cheap including shipping. I am not trying to put a downer on this M100 or any M100. I love mine and would not sell if for any amount of money. You asked a question and I am giving you my best answer. What I think is cool is when we are at a cars and coffee or some car show, and I tell someone that the M100 is most likely the rarest car here....they look at me like I am crazy....but it is true.
