Problem being, the thermal reactor caused so much heat, warped heads were nightmares in those days! Been there done that! Its a BMW, so still a fun driver. 1980 onwards, BMW switched to a 1.8 M10 engine with catalytics which eliminates the reactors. Potent model in the series is the 323i Euro with 150HP 6 cy engine. Rear KYBs seem fine. It's not a new car, don't expect that. But I've driven it a lot and had no issues.\nThermostat, which I replaced to smog it, just started leaking. I have another new one, will replace before end of the auction.\n\nHas a high greenhouse. I'm 5'7\", there's a lot more room both vertically and horizontally. The six cylinder models in other markets continued with them, but all four cylinder models (worldwide) had lighter hubs. Not a huge difference, but that makes the '77 model distinctive.\n\nThe rear anti-roll bar was removed in 1978 and stiffer front springs were substituted to alleviate rear wheel lift in aggressive cornering situations. The rear bar returned from 1980 onward in the \"S\" model. By tinkering with sport shocks, aftermarket springs, and varying the size of front and rear bars, a much more aggressive suspension setup can be easily (and cheaply) developed. Like the 2002, these cars provide a very visceral driving experience that really connects the driver to the road, though the e21 is not as harsh as the 02.\n\nFront rotors were ventilated that year, another 1977 only distinction for the 320i. As with the front hubs, they were only used on the six cylinder models in other markets. Solid rotors followed on all later four cylinder e21s.\n\nAs others have noted, the thermal reactor emissions system was clunky, and mildly troublesome compared to the later 1.8 liter, catalytic converter based engine, but the slight increase in the 2.0 liter's torque makes for a pretty much even trade. An ambitious M10 engine builder can merge the 2.0 liter block with the later 1.8i head and K-Jet injection to create the best of both.\n\nThe 5-speed conversion on this car is a nice upgrade. Assuming that this '77 model has it's original 3.64 differential, that should make for very relaxed interstate cruising. The only feeling I can equate going from a 2002 to this is my recent experience of a very early impact-bumper 911 vs. a longhood.\n\nI have a '75 S and when I first had experience with it, my first impression was 'Wow - I can't believe how far 911s had come and how old a '73 911T feels compared to this '75.' It is just a newer generation more refined. I think the '74 and '75 midyear 911s have it all over the longhoods - and they are just as light.\n\nSo I wouldn't bash this car. It's awesome. I was awestruck by the first one I ever saw. Our highschool language teacher had one. It was a big deal. It was the only BMW in the faculty lot. I was the original owner of a \u201977 320i which I parted with only last year when I moved away from the mainland. When it comes to decisions regarding these cars, It\u2019s all about the body. Although better than previous generation BMW\u2019s, they are still rust-prone \u2013 rocker panels, shock towers (esp rear), fenders, etc. This one looks in very good condition in this respect. Not a big fan of the repaint to a different color though. \n\nMechanically, they are basically bulletproof \u2013 mine let me down on the road only once in 38 years when the original fuel pump gave out after 32 years. The K-jetronic CIS fuel injection system otherwise never gave any trouble - maybe because the car never sat for any extended period. It was my daily driver to work for most of those years and it is hard to think of a better vehicle for city driving \u2013 small, quick (due to light weight), responsive steering, and fantastic all-round vision. Although decent to begin with \u2013 a few selective upgrades really made them great drivers. Suspension upgrades (Bilstein shocks and European sport springs for the front) did wonders, as did losing the emissions control equipment. (Incidentally, only CA versions had the dreaded thermal reactor \u2013 49 state versions made do with EGR and air pump). Where I lived it was an idle test only, and it never failed. Ignition upgrades \u2013 including Bosch red coil and Pertronix \u2013 helped too. None of this is expensive stuff but together they make the car a reliable fantastic driver, as others have noted. \n\nThe five-speed conversion from 1980+ 320i\u201ds is a great thing for this car. With the 3.64 rear end and the higher output of the 2 liter engine, you could get effortless, economical highway driving along with excellent acceleration.\n\nIt doesn\u2019t look like this has a/c. I didn\u2019t either which I definitely regretted at times, living on the east coast. But the systems in those days were state-side add-ons and not particularly good. No a/c also kept the engine bay relatively uncluttered and easy to work on, Sunroof is nice, but beware if you are tall.
