I'll try to answer some of the questions- No, the suspension components are original. When I said rubber, I was referring to hoses, fuel lines, things like that. I should have been more specific. I never thought of this as a restoration. In my mind a restoration would entail a new interior and dash, engine and transmission and rear end rebuild, and full suspension rebuild. It just didn't seem necessary. As for the right side mirror- required to be legal in California. Don't know about other states. As for the wiper motor- according to the zforum, they were never good to begin with, so using one from a junker does not help. New ones are unobtanium, but there is a fix on the zforum that involves a Mitsubishi motor and some rewiring. When the head was done, yes, new chain, water pump. At 91k it didn't seem necessary to tear the engine apart when it was obvious that the reason it was parked for 12 years was the bad valve. As for the tires- no conspiracy here- I just took it to the local tire shop and replaced them with the same size that was already on there. The head was done by the NAPA machine shop in Auburn- the guys there all have gray hair, which is now my criteria for machinists. Yes, new valves, seals. And it has a new alternator from zconnection, and new starter. I really thought that the major objection would be the dash cap and the radio. And that is the Datsun radio that was in the car when I bought it and I was told that it was the original radio. Would be curious to see what the original radio looks like if that is not the one. The recall fix was a retro dealer installed anti-vapor lock kit, which was to add an electric fuel pump and by pass the mechanical. Then add heat shield insulation wrap around all fuel lines in the engine bay area. It kind of helped, but the actual culprit was the cold starting circuit which would allow warming radiator water to pass through the intake manifold. A thermostat control would fail to close after engine was up to operating temp and the heated water vaporized the fuel. A simple and better fix was to crimp of the tubing at the rear of the block and plug the hose on the return at front with an old ignition condenser. Problem solved! \n Another tip about the (little) water pump failure is not to over tighten the belt when adjusting tension on alternator. As for the radio, the early Series I have the vertical antennae button and plays static over a wide band of AM frequencies, while the later models had the luxury of AM and FM. The antennae switch was moved up top and placed horizontally. I am not certain when the transition was made but the AM-only radio is a dead giveaway for a Series I. Good luck getting a Series I radio for under $1000 nowadays. As for restomods, there are plenty of $3000-5000 ones out there that are deserving of the technological and engineering advancements. Yes, a lot of hard work has been done with the bare metal respray but it is easy to see that the engine and engine bay needs painting and a thorough detailing. The suspension needs to be rebuilt and detailed to bring everything up to the same level as the body. If all that had been done I think the bidding would have easily been $10K+ higher. More and more of these cars are coming out of the woodwork in all conditions. Prices are definitely up but supply is there too and even today there is something out there for every price point.
