The plywood cover on the parcel tray is not original, but the tray itself would be.\n\nThe crossmember where the torsion bars connect is a critical structural piece -- any buyer would want to get a really close look at that. Really, look closely at the whole underside. These cars used good, thick metal but rust is still an issue.\n\nThese Minors are a surprising amount of fun. I bought a '66 4-door last summer on a whim, and it's proved to be a lot of fun. Lots of parts from a Spridget can bolt right in -- mine has a 1275, 5-speed (Datsun) and front disc brakes. The Minor gained the \"Austin\" developed A-series after former rivals Austin and Morris merged in 1952 to form BMC. \n\nTo be honest, both the 803cc A-series and 903cc side-valve engines are usually considered to be hopelessly underpowered even in a car this size. Many original Minors with these tiny engines got upgraded with the superior later spec engines over the years. \n\nAs others have commented, swapping in a 1275cc A-series from a Sprite/Midget or Morris Marina is pretty straightforward and would make this car a lot more practical. The Minor was designed by Alec Issigonis, who went on to develop the Mini and they actually steer and handle quite nicely - despite the rather \"upright\" looks.\n\nThis one looks like a pretty nice example. Also done in grey with the red leather interior, that little car got us everywhere we wanted to go for many years.\r\n\r\nOur garage was off of an alley, and the local plow crew would seal the ends of that alley tight with snow each winter morning. Didn't stop mom or the minor. She would pull up to the snow bank and check for traffic (there never was any), then back up 30 yards, let the clutch out, and put her foot down. Bam! Right through the snow bank. Every day, all winter. Rear wheels spinning under the force of all 37 HP. She would fish tail into the cross street and we were off to school. We even had some snow chains for when the alley got too icy.\r\n\r\nI can still bring up the smell of that interior.\r\n\r\nThe car ran wonderfully until my older sister used it to learn to drive a stick. Burned the clutch out in record time. It took two years for the local shop to source the parts and get it rebuilt.\r\n\r\nAll that winter driving was hard on the sheet metal, of course, and by the time I got my licence the old girl only had a few more trips left in her. Wonderfully fun to drive, not fast but torquey and very light.\r\n\r\nMom went through a chain of other similarly sized cars, and only now at age 80 is she driving her first automatic tranny car. Engine dead. Tree growing in the back as top was down. I sourced a midget 1098 and installed it. Twin carb manifold included an exhaust that exited the opposite of the combined single carb unit. I duct taped a vacuum cleaner hose to the header and the header pipe and drove the car from MD to NJ. Was quite loud. Later put the single unit back and new head pipe. Eventually went to custom intake and headers. Loved the car. Put heavier oil in the shocks. Atf in the dash pots. Radials. The front rail were rusting out by the torsion bars so I welded angle iron on both sides. Hated the master cylinder inside the frame under the floor. The black box was always causing odd problems. The car would continue to run if my foot was on the brake when I switched off ignition. Loved the started pull. Once drove from Boston to Philly with a bad generator. Battery finally died just out of philly. Drove down Mt Washington to Boston with only the emergency brake. Got t-boned at an intersection once and came to rest against gas pumps at the corner station. Replaced the door and drove for years more. Once accidentally led a parade, with expired plates and inspection, until the cops in the parade chased me down alleys and gave me a warning in front of a Girl Scout troop. I think my Md driver license, pa plates and all were too much paperwork. They wanted to get back to the parade. People thought I had a clown car. All fenders and doors were different color donor parts. The top was down and me with long wild hair and an antique trophy jacket. I loved that car. I probably dragged a dozen out of junkyards to keep it going.
