I drove over 100,000 miles in that car. It was just big enough to ride well and had a touch of luxury for its day. \n\nHonda only offered three colors per model year, and eventually two trim levels (base and LX - this is the former, though I don't know that year the LX grade first appeared) and really no options. Radios and air conditioning were added by the dealer. Lack of variations made it relatively simple for Honda to manufacture, yet they still weren't able to make enough to meet demand. \n\nThus, dealerships had waiting lists, markups, or both. If you were on the waiting list and the call came in, you took whatever color that car happened to be. If you passed, there was a string of other customers waiting for the car as well. Many Honda dealers had started out selling motorcycles initially, and were now enjoying salad days thanks to this car.\n\nBy today's standards, this car is really small, but wasn't necessarily considered so back then. If you could see one parked next to a 2017 Civic, it would be dwarfed by it. Heck, I bet it's even smaller than a new Fit. Sure, the car was amazing for its time, but looking back the stock-size tires turned out to be the perfect driver training aid for a new-ish driver... that's because those little 155/80-13s were SUPER SKINNY! \n\nBack then I really hated the lack of traction on rainy days and off-ramps, but those skinny little tires let me easily slide my Accord around, allowing me to experience under-steer and over-steer at speeds more appropriate for a Schwinn 10-speed. Or in other words, it was totally safe and benign... and the perfect platform to learn car control through actual hands-on, seat-of-the-pants experience. \n\nToday's cars - even the entry-level stuff - stick like glue in comparison and while they're super safe with all the goofy tech like lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking (I hate that overly intrusive crap), too many people over-rely on these safety nannies and never take the time or even have the opportunity to learn what their car can do near the limits of traction since they rarely reach those limits...\n\nThat said, I loved my early Accord and I love this one as well. I finally took possession of a first generation Accord CVCC, a lovely little 1979 LX hatchback with 67,000 miles on the odometer, backed up by extensive service paperwork back to new and the original window sticker. The car was first sold in California and later relocated to Utah, so it was almost completely rust-free. The previous owner drove it from Utah to Gulfport, Mississippi about three years ago. As it was a desert car with NO tint, the paint and interior upholstery were pretty much shot (although the dash is fine). But EVERYTHING worked, including the A/C. (OK, the digital clock did not work, most of the time.) Owner needed garage space for a many-windowed VW bus so I snapped it up. It has been repainted in original silver, trim off but engine and glass in...those weather seals are somewhat crispy after 35 years and are hard to replace. The seats were reupholstered in the original pattern with as good a match as we could come up with. That rose red interior (more maroon, actually) is soooo 70s but is getting hard to find even in the aftermarket.\n\nThe car gets driven regularly and proudly parades among the hot rods and muscle cars during Cruisin' the Coast each October where it gets far more attention than most first gen Camaros and Mustangs. When I got out of college in 1978, I bought a brand new Accord LX manual in maroon. It was a well put together vehicle compared to much of what the US manufacturers turned out. I put 45,000 miles on it the first year, mostly from having a girlfriend who lived 8 hours away. Around 50,000 miles I started experiencing problems with the engine - lots of smoke and excessive oil consumption. The car stranded me one night and had to be towed in. \n\nTo shorten the story, the engine was replaced twice by Honda (at no cost to me) due to oil contamination (the second time was because the first replacement engine threw a rod). I believe they ended up recalling some of the vehicles for the same problem. I ended up selling the car a few months after the second engine installation.
