On this side of pond, John Buffam drove them. In 1977, the World Rally Championship came to Canada. The Criterium d'Quebec near Mt. Tremblant, and surrounding forest roads. It was Fiat vs. Ford that year. 131 Abarth vs. RS2000. Fiat was determined to win. They entered 6 cars. Ford brought 3. And then, there was a lone Triumph TR7. JB and the Boys from Vermont were taking on the big Boys. And they didn't expect anything from the lone TR7. They proved them wrong. JB was running around 5th for the first two days. Then, some of the Fiat's, and 1 Ford had issues. JB got up to 3rd. But on one of the last big forest stages, the hood on the TR came lose, and folded up on the windscreen. There is a picture of John leaning out holding/pushing the hood (bonnet) so he can see to finish the stage. He did. I think he still finished in the top ten. I should mention I was crewing a U.S. rally car that was running. I saw all the glory of massive factory backing for the Ford's and Fiat's. But was quietly hoping the TR7 would upset the big teams. They kind of did. TR8's are just better. It will be interesting to see Coupe vs. Convertible sales. Crane XR700 was on the car when I purchased it.\r\n\r\nRegarding Rust: The car was rustproofed shortly after its initial purchase in the 80s by a \"Rusty Jones\" franchise in Upstate NY. However, that does not mean the car is rust free. One can see the rust staining around the front strut turrets. The spare tire well has some rust issues beginning around the drain holes. This is best seen underneath the car, where the undercoating was peeling. On the front headlamp panel, there was rust pimples beginning to develop along the seams.\r\n\r\nThe largest area of concern on 7s and 8s, is the windshield surround area, which an infamous water trapping mechanism. This car is no exception. The car has rust pinholes and corrosion in the area beneath the black fascia at the base of the windshield. The metal is a single layer here and easily rusts. I stabilized it with phosphoric acid and rust preventative paint. As the car was a driver at that point and since TR8 values were laughably low, I decided to just monitor it rather than cut out the metal, etc. The fascia panel is easily removed to see this area.\r\n\r\nI had a rather large binder of documents that I provided to the next owner that well documents the history of the car.
