Scenes of Rocky making seemingly neverending upshifts in an inky black Jalpa as it deftly handles the undulations of tunnel pavement is by far the most memorable part of the film, and one of the best car scenes in a movie where the car (or cars) is not the main subject. To top it off, all this is done against the backdrop of a quintessential '80's power ballad, which serves as music for a kick-ass montage. Love it. \n\nCinema aside, I've always viewed the Jalpa as the wrongly underappreciated younger sibling of the Countach. I've always thought it's lines were cleaner and more straightforward than the bloated and cartoonish redesigned Countach of 25th Anniversary yore, and definitely cleaner than Lamborghini's current offerings, which all look the same. The draftsman pointed to the rocker panel \"No no no no, this car is Eye-tal-E-un. Pronounced Ja'll-PAY\", spraying me lightly with his certainty and gesturing over the rocker letters authoritatively. He went on about it being very expensive, top dollar Lambor-Jeeenie and all. I didn't have the heart to correct him, but later a few of us had a laugh over it. I am not being snarky, I actually think Jalpas are technically interesting, attractive in a restrained way not typical of Lamborghini and, of course, exceedingly rare. They obviously never caught on with exotic car enthusiasts in the way that Ferrari 308s did (thanks, in no small measure, to a certain fictional Hawai'i-based private detective) and that's probably a blessing in disguise as Lamborghini -- so financially precarious at that time -- likely would not have been able to handle the volume. Let's face it, assembly quality in Lambo's of this era was spotty enough at the low volumes they were producing. Anyway, my point -- yes, I have one -- is that this is a very special car and deserves the attention and care it will take to make it both beautiful and robust for a long time to come. But with the obvious and listed things it needs, there's likely more legacy issues to be addressed as well and it's going to be a labour of love making this diamond shine. They were essentially hand-built. (Volvo also bragged that they required Bertone to improve its paint quality to meet higher standards for the 780, and the other 3 car lines benefited from that.) My only regret was that photography was strictly prohibited.
