A bright or dark color can really serve a car's lines, creases and panels, or consequently do them a disservice. Black, in particular, makes the black tires integrate more fully into a car's shape--the car becomes one, pure silhouette. \n\nI think black serves this design well, especially with just the right amount of thin chrome 'lines' to intersect or ring the darkness. Those panels can warp, or someone 40 yrs ago thought it'd be a great idea to cut holes in them for some Jensen 6x9 speakers etc, so the panel itself might've been replaced from a breaker Montreal. The best way know original color for sure would be to lift the carpets or pop off the door panels - and even then might not be conclusive. But the exterior \"verde\" color code and the interior \"avana\" carpet color align with standard color combos for an early Montreal. \n\nThe light grey carpet in my car was my first hint that the original color might not be Alfa red (\"rosso\") as is currently on the car, since a rosso exterior should have black carpets in 1972. Montreals had zinc phosphate coated panels and undercoating from the factor. So for an Alfa, the bodies are relatively resistant to rust - more so than other Italian cars from that era, though perhaps not exactly a high bar.\n\nThey do tend to rust at the B pillar (between bottom of door and rear wheel opening). Those stylized side vents allow water to get in. There's a drain hole at the bottom that have a tendency to get plugged over the years if not maintained. Once the hole plugs up, then it's only a matter of time before water accumulates and rust/rot set in. It was a real standout as a design for 1967. But it was built on a Type 105 platform with a standard 1600 L4. Because the car was received so well, Alfa decided to put it into production, but frankly took a somewhat half-hearted approach to doing so. Instead of developing a dedicated platform for the car, the decision was made to retain the 105 platform, with a street engine based on the Type 33 racing V8. This made it far less a \u201csupercar\u201d than its looks and engine spec promised. \n\nAll that could be excused if the car had been rushed into production. But the production prototype didn\u2019t appear until March 1970 at Geneva. And delivery of production cars came even later than that; I saw the show car in Montreal, but when I saw a production example in the Alfa showroom in Florence in summer 1972, it hadn\u2019t been out very long. So there was plenty of time to have better sorted out the suspension and brakes; for those questioning it, the ride height here is as it left the factory. Fixes are available to address the handling and braking issues; you can easily make your Montreal much better now than when Alfa built it. But that shouldn\u2019t have been necessary.\n\nAnd they should have gotten the detailing better, too. The show car details were a lot cleaner and, as a show car, you can just visually enjoy the details without any functional considerations. Production cars don\u2019t get that pass. So I\u2019ve always found the production design\u2019s fake NACA duct and less-well-resolved headlight grilles to be grating, As a designer it annoys me that door handle doesn\u2019t align with one of the dorsal vents, and that only half the vents are functional. \n\nSo for me, black is the perfect color for a Montreal; it camouflages the details. /rant\n\nBut, as noted above, there are fixes available, and with them you have a very capable GT, if still not a supercar. And while it\u2019s unlikely prices will continue to climb as fast as they have in the past 5 years, there\u2019s no reason to imagine they\u2019re going to go down from here, either.
