The standard TR2/3 gearbox is crap, I have a half dozen of them, if someone buys this car and want one I'll give them the best of them. I consider them worthless. The TR4 boxes are marginally better, but require endless work to keep them together if you increase power even a bit. For racing I use the TR4 shell with a Quaife dog box. On the street that would be heinous--the gearbox is louder than the engine. Or you could pay Hardy Prentiss a well-deserved small fortune to do his magic if you could even convince him to do so. There are some remarkably capable TR4 gearbox specialists who can extract every bit of potential reliability but after all that effort some fundamental fragility remains. The HVDA conversion is beautifully done, and is an excellent choice. It's sort of pressing the easy button although my personal preference would have been to go with a later TR6 box with an a-type. If you have taken apart one of these gearboxes the weak point is fairly obvious. The main shaft rides on two big roller bearings and the layshaft rides on loose needle bearings. Normal gearbox action means that the two shafts are constantly trying to force each other apart. If the oil level drops a bit the needle bearings get crushed, the layshaft under high torque (i.e. 1st) is forced apart and gear teeth get chipped off. In particular, we restored half a dozen late, TR2s and early TR3s. Cars here really don't rust, especially race cars that are in doors, during the rainy season.
