The SCG road test of a 1961 Austin 850 (it's in my library) shows a 0 to 60 of 24 seconds and a top speed of 72 mph. A cruise speed of 60 to 65 is probably the most realistic and it won't hold that speed on inclines. The Toronto branch of S&M Minis drove two perfectly restored 850s from Toronto to Mid-Ohio for the Can Am Mini Challenge in 2014 and that was the story of their round trip. (They had a yank tank running rear guard for them on the interstate.) Driving around the hilly Ohio countryside in the evenings involved a lot of third gear running but was still fun. \n\nThe worst part of the 850 was the single leading shoe front brakes, inadequate in the 60's when I started driving them and terrifying nowadays. While the 850 braking ability didn't actually get worse over time everything else got a whole lot better. The S&M cars on the 2014 trip were upgraded to Cooper 998 front discs, a concession to staying alive. This Authi should have the twin leading shoe front brakes, also a good upgrade over the SLS type.\n\nThe trip odometer issue is easy to resolve - it's a pocket size spiral bound notebook and a pen. There's always been one in the door pocket of my Cooper. Does anyone care to know my fuel mileage and average speed from Wendover to Winnemucca on the way to Mini Meet West 1979? I also have the notebook for my MG 1100 that did about 45,000 highway miles in two years. But that may be partly a question of how you are using them. Driven fast and hard where straight stops and repeatability count the Cooper 997 disc works better for me than the TLS. But for around town stop and go the TLS is more livable due to the very high pedal pressure with the 997 brakes. The revised pad geometry on the 998 Cooper brakes greatly improved the pedal pressure problem. You touched on \u201cproperly adjusted\u201d TLS brakes and that\u2019s a key point with any front drum brake and seems to be exacerbated with a TLS set-up. To each his own and of course the S brakes are a no-brainer when originality and racing rules don\u2019t matter.\n\nAs to the door discussion, they are a slightly different shape and dimensions than the external hinge doors but I don\u2019t think they should be quantified as being \u2018larger\u2019. It\u2019s not as if a Mini door is too small!\n\nThis is a really nice Mini on auction here. I think it deserves a bidding war in the last 30 minutes or so. If it still retains its original tank, a 65 would have a 6.5US gallon tank and a 93 would have a 9US gallon tank.
