This is my second-time as a BaT seller, especially after having sold my folks\u2019 vintage Mercedes S500 late last fall. As all the positive comments last time were just fantastic, it\u2019s really great to connect with fellow petrol-heads here.\r\n\r\nWell, this time around, I\u2019m selling my 50-year-old BMW R75/6, which has just 19,996 miles on the odometer. Here\u2019s the longer backstory.\r\n\r\nThis 1975 BMW R75/6 in Monza Blue Metallic was essentially a single-owner bike for its whole life. A dear friend of mine\u2019s dad, Jim, owned it and took great care of it like no other Airhead rider I\u2019ve ever met. As a BMW enthusiast and a heavy machinery mechanic, Jim bought it from Freeman\u2019s Cycles in nearby Beverly, MA (In fact, the original dealer sticker is still on the right of the rear fender, and two original leather BMW dealership key fobs are included). Replacing his green 1970s Honda, the R75/6 quickly became his daily commuter from his home in Stoneham, MA. My friend fondly remembers growing up with the bike, and she recalls that her father would generally ride locally while occasionally enjoying a weekend trip up to Maine.\r\n\r\nAccording to my friend, apparently Jim was one of those guys who really tended to save stuff. When I eventually reviewed the thick stack of papers and tons of extras that came with the bike, she wasn\u2019t kidding. Clearly, multiple and reputable BMW shops in the Boston area meticulously serviced it over the years; I was amazed to see to what extent he invested in and preserved the bike. In the early 2010s, Jim and his wife retired to South Carolina, bringing the R75/6 with him. Unfortunately, Jim passed away during the early Covid-19 pandemic, and the bike was ready for a new owner.\r\n\r\nNow, I personally have been an Airhead fan and owner for decades, and these bikes are arguably bulletproof if you take good care of them. In addition to my BMW R1200C Phoenix cruiser, I had also owned a nearly identical R75/6 bike in black. Mine was a 1976 model that I had converted to the R90S style (which coincidentally had the original title color listed as \u201cblue\u201d). In the very early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, I sold it to a young gentleman from Amsterdam who immediately fell in love with it. I thought my days of vintage bike ownership were over.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, at the very end of 2020, I received the sad news from my friend that Jim had passed. What I hadn\u2019t expected was her offer to sell me her father\u2019s bike. Mistakenly thinking it was Jim\u2019s K-bike (which had apparently been sold many years beforehand), I figured I\u2019d pass on it. But when I learned the details, I was blown away to learn it was almost exactly the same bike I\u2019d ridden for decades! Better yet, it was in the Monza Blue and with the large standard tank size (complete with the cool rubber knee pads), both of which I always secretly wanted. Talk about fate! I told her that as soon as I could safely drive down to South Carolina, I\u2019d come pay a visit, pick it up, and trailer it home. I hoped to restore the /6 in Jim\u2019s memory in my small way.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, during the pandemic, I myself ultimately had to stay in Boston due to medical issues; my grand plan to take a road trip to Charleston and trailer it home never materialized. By October 2023, Jim\u2019s house was being prepared for sale, so I quickly had it shipped up north via a motorcycle shipping specialist, who carefully transported it in a covered motorcycle trailer. Once the probate delays were ironed out, I formally purchased the bike in December 2023. After a 10+ year vacation in SC, the /6 was finally back home in Boston. It quickly became known as \u201cBlue Bike,\u201d a nod to the famous blue bike-sharing program and its ubiquitous blue bikes up here in Boston.\r\n\r\nBoy, was I surprised at what I found! I marveled at what amazing condition I received it in \u2013 Jim really took great care of his bikes. Not only did the extensive records make sense, working on the bike \u2013 I was able to easily deduce what Jim had done over time \u2013 which was kind of a magical experience in itself. To be quite honest, the /6 felt like a bit of a barn find.\r\n\r\nThis being my second R75/6 restoration, I intentionally decided to have a very light hand as it was super-original, especially as one can\u2019t undo any patina. The tank paint was clearly original, especially as evidenced by the faded and original BMW roundel badges that I replaced. Like many R-bike owners, I suspect that Jim may have touched up the Avus Black here and there (I think I did so myself in a few tiny spots), but I really just wanted to leave it alone.\r\n\r\nI splashed out on a pair of grippy and expensive Michelin Road Classics, and the bike felt fantastic. I registered the bike here in Massachusetts and it passed with flying colors. Last year, I enjoyed just a few short rides, putting a mere 63 miles on it to test it out.\r\n\r\nWell, early last fall, I realized that unfortunately I would be losing my covered garage space, so I was forced to decide what to do with the bike. In the end, I thought it would be best to carefully store it and just prepare it for sale. Like my previous /6, I figured that someone else should have the joy of making new memories with \u201cBlue Bike.\u201d \r\n\r\nIt was also very tempting to keep riding the bike until the time of auction, but I decided to keep the mileage under 20K so the new owner could experience that special moment when all the numbers flip over together in synchrony. I did a similar thing with the S500 I sold last fall, which intentionally had 54321 miles on the odometer at the time of sale.\r\n\r\nAnyway, \u201cBlue Bike\u201d is ready to be enjoyed by someone else, whether it\u2019s as a collector\u2019s piece or a functional classic. Great question \u2014 From what I could tell, the gas tank\u2019s interior seemed just fine. Before I got the /6, I had worried that the tank would arrive either all rusted out internally, or would come with a very unwelcome (and likely peeling) interior coating job that was all too common on these bikes (a regular headache on my former R90S tank on my long-since sold /6). But from my brief visual inspection during my light restoration, I remember remarking to myself that the inside of the gas tank looked good. Next, when I rebuilt both Karcoma petcocks, thankfully the two filters weren't all clogged up with rusty crud \u2014 another very encouraging sign. Finally, when I drained and rinsed the tank with fresh fuel, I was relieved to see that hardly any sediment at all poured out \u2014 amazing for a tank that likely hadn\u2019t been rinsed in at least a decade. \u2014 again a testament to Jim\u2019s meticulous care.
