Also, the crankcase pressure should be checked. A poor design in the block and oil pan makes cleaning it very expensive. I\u2019ve found that engines using pure synthetic oil are less susceptible to the problem. \r\nNot a rocket ship but adequate power unless you\u2019re hauling too much weight. Volvo's \"official\" interval was rather too long. Mine gets very grumpy when the transmission gets hot in stop-and-go traffic at 122K. Will be replacing the shift-quality solenoids this summer - not a terrible DIY job thankfully.\n\nOne of the nice things about the non-turbos is that just about everything maintenance-wise is cheaper and easier. The PCV service is MUCH easier, and about $100 less parts needed. Fewer hoses in the way of everything and the throttle body isn't buried underneath the intake manifold. \n\nThis car is right about at the age where it is going to need some fairly spendy maintenance done. Suspension, timing belt is waaay overdue on time if it's never been done, the PCV service, motor mounts, etc. But once up to snuff these are really lovely cars. \n\nI don't really see the point of the extra speed of the turbos in these - there is nothing sporting about them anyway, they are just a comfy Swedish load lugger. Kick back and go with the flow. \n\nOne odd-ball thing to watch out for is the non-turbos have an intake air thermostat that opens and closes off an extra intake off the exhaust manifold. They are pretty much all dead at this point, and they default to full hot air all the time. Unlike the 2/7/9s that have this, you can't replace the thermostat separately. You need a whole new airbox. Thankfully only ~$225 from Volvo. With the hot air stuck on, performance and fuel economy suffer. Easy to check by pulling the air intake off the airbox - the mechanism is right there and on a reasonably warm day with the car warmed up the hot side should be CLOSED.
