What you see is an illusion. Buick put the fan a half-inch off the radiator core with a fan extension and a (2 year only) long snout water pump. \r\n\r\nOn air conditioned versions the same setup is used, no shroud, but a 6 blade fan with a clutch is employed. I own a 1960 Electra with air conditioning. \r\n\r\nSome small details on this car are impressively correct. For example, Buicks through 1960 start with the accelerator pedal instead of the ignition switch, which has no crank position. Thus there is no way to activate the \"hot\" lamp test function while holding the key in crank as in most every other car. \r\n\r\nBuick got around that for 1960, its first year using a \"hot\" warning lamp and last year of accelerator pedal crank with a vacuum switch mounted above the fuel filter sediment bowl. This switch illuminates the \"hot\" lamp with ignition on until the running engines vacuum pulls it off. \r\n\r\n\"So what\" you say? Well the great majority of 1960 Buicks lost this switch long ago. Still more wear replacement carburetors in which gas pedal starting was converted to a cheap aftermarket horn button screwed under the dash. It always saddens me to see that. \r\n\r\nThe Buick division was pretty much its own self-contained car company who used less of GM's parts barrel of generic corporate hardware than other divisions. \r\n\r\nBuick designed and built its own torque converter automatic for 1948 called Dynaflow. Buick didn't like the idea of the corporate Hydra-Matic because Buick used a Torque tube drive line and feared the jerky shifting 4 speed would transmit too much vibration. \r\n\r\nNo other division used Buick's Dynaflow beyond the short period of 1953 substitutions in Cadillac after the Hydra-Matic plant burned to the ground. \r\n\r\nBuick went its own way, keeping its Dynaflow through 1963 and its wonderful nailhead V8 through 1966. It didn't give up gas pedal start, torque tube and radius rods until 1961. Buick held on tight to its aging but smooth and reliable tech until the accountants finally had their way. \r\n\r\nWhen it came time for a new automatic transmission it was Buick engineers who designed the vaunted Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 first used in all big Buicks and get this...only senior Cadillac in 1964. Lower priced Cadillac buyers had to pay extra for Buicks transmission. \r\n\r\nThe 1960 Buick does not drive like any other 1960 GM car. These are softly sprung and buoyant. The Dynaflow is a two speed but 1st year is only available via manual selection and will not upshift to high on its own. So the effect is an uninterrupted swell of power that builds until you are going much faster than you think. This was a problem...75 year old drivers hurtling down turnpikes at 90 MPH when it feels like 60. So the 1960 Buick has an adjustable speed minder to the right of the speedometer that sets off a buzzer when the selected speed is exceeded. \r\n\r\nHere's two more things to know, the Dynaflow transmission has poor engine braking and the car weighs about 4,600 pounds. Buick employs 12 inch finned aluminum front brake drums that stop very well and resist fade on long down hill runs. Only Pontiac offered something similar. \r\n\r\nAnd last, the speedometer is actually an adjustable mirror so a driver can adjust the angle to suit. \r\n\r\nThe 1960 Buick was easily the best car GM built that season. The lighter and ashtray are covered by a rectangular door that flips open. The surface of the door has cast-in ridges in the long dimension. Caddy\u2019s have the same part but the surface of the door has a brushed finish rather than the ridges, but will do in a pinch. \r\n\r\n- buying this in Burgum Land and trying to drive it home to pretty much anywhere else might sound really romantic and cool, but after the first 25 miles you\u2019ll want an orthopedic back brace at best, or to slit your wrists at worst - except maybe if you\u2019re under 40 and/or stoned.
