I love mine - one hell of car to throw around. \r\n\r\nThe design of the rear IRS changes how this Caterham drives compared with the deDion chassis version. The CSR feels like a much bigger heavier car despite weighing essentially the same as the deDion. It feels planted all the way up to the limit. Mid-corner bumps do not throw it offline. Point to point it will be faster than an equivalent hp deDion Caterham. \r\n\r\nThe Duratec engine in this configuration is bullet proof. Its virtually a standard manufacturer tune. Plenty of torque from the 2.3L for the weight of the car. \r\n\r\nA couple of things to look for on this CSR version of Caterham:\r\n\r\n1) Differential. The original CSR design was for 2 chassis mount points to the diff as shown in this car for auction. What was discovered later that the torque from the 265hp version Cosworth in the CSR260 would frequently rip the bolt mounts off the diff casing. It was rare for this to be seen in the CSR200 but did happen in isolated instances. The fix was to install the extra race diff struts which ran diagonally through the trunk/boot area to bolt to the chassis, thereby creating 4 mount points for the diff to handle the torque. This is not a major concern in a CSR200 but should be a frequent maintenance check item for the new owner. Also if you want to upgrade power in the future (as the chassis can handle it easily) then you need to upgrade to the extra diff mounts. \r\n\r\n2) Gearbox. The Caterham 6 speed box should be treated with some delicacy - break it and you could be off the road for a while. It is a nice gearbox, good shifts, great set of ratios that suit the Duratec beautifully. It is a derivation of the Ford T9 5 speed box so has some design quirks. Caterham no longer support the gearbox. Refurb kits can be bought from two specialists in the UK and then used to rebuild the gearbox here in North America. \r\n\r\n3) Suspension. The standard Ford rubber suspension bushings from Caterham have a tendency to wear out quickly. No idea why as they last forever on a deDion chassis. The best solution I have found is go to poly bushings all round - Powerflex in PA sell them for the CSR.\r\n\r\n4) Lower rear shock mounts. The early CSRs used cast iron lower rear shock mounts. Sometime around 2009-2014 Caterham shifted to aluminum for the part. There has been a rash of failures of the cast iron parts recently from metal fatigue/corrosion. I cannot see what is installed on this car being auctioned but if it is the cast iron part then it is should inspected. The aluminum part has not shown any problems. Caterham do not have the part for sale but there is a race team in the UK that has manufactured the part in steel for a reasonable cost. I live in NYC which probably has worse roads and drivers than Toronto!\n\n200-220hp is the sweet spot for the right mix of backroads and track in any Caterham. Any more and it becomes too much for the road. I have the CSR260 with 265hp and it is just stupidly too fast on the road - brilliant on track though. With the IRS this chassis has then you have a fantastic point to point car for backroad blats. It will eat up any other sports car you could put up against it in this role. \n\nThe 2.3L also gives you the choice of spiritedly rowing the 6 gears or using the torque to loaf around in 5th or 6th. 6th is a 1:1 gear in this box and not an overdrive. \n\nThe ride comfort is surprisingly plush as well. The CSR rides better than any other car I own but it does not wallow around - its just very well controlled. It absorbs the potholes amazingly well. Canada allows gray market cars to be imported after 15 years. The USA is 25 years. So supposedly a way to get a newer car (less than 25 but more than 15) into the USA was to import it into Canada, then register/title it in a border state. Once you have that title, then titling it in a non-border state is much easier because you have a US title. Not sure if this is true but always wondered. I'm professionally in a car niche in which people have been importing or trying to import gray market vehicles for a very long time. I've heard every scheme known to man to get them here prior to the legal import date. Some and many/most are blatantly fraudulent and illegal. This would agree with Croc\u2019s description of the 5th character indicating which rear end the car came with as \u201cI\u201d would stand for IRS (Independent Rear Suspension). On USA7s he used \u201cD\u201d for De Dion.\r\nI verified this by finding another CSR VIN from a car that sold a few years ago in the UK. A 2005 right hand drive CSR 260 with the VIN number: SDKRISRC250060067 \r\nSo \u201cR\u201d for Right Hand Drive and \u201cI\u201d for IRS. The 10th character \u201c5\u201d is the model year for the kit, 2005. \r\nNow I see two problems here. \r\nFirst; If only the stamped characters on the VIN plate are used to identify a vehicle for registration/ownership purposes than, the \u201c5\u201d will cause problems. Those wanting to Import the car into the states need it to be over 25 years old. I think that means it needs to be a T or a V.\r\nSecond; Neither the letters \u201cI\u201d or \u201cO\u201d are to be used in a VIN number as they can be mistaken for the numbers \u201cOne\u201d and \u201cZero\u201d. I do not know what Caterham was thinking when they came up with the VIN nomenclature. They have created a problem because; the ninth character is the check digit. It is the character that verifies that it\u2019s a legitimate VIN. As it is now, every free on-line VIN checker I\u2019ve tried comes back with \u201cCheck Digit Invalid\u201d. It wants to see a 3 but it\u2019s seeing a 1. Also, that kind of throws a wrench into Croc\u2019s theory that \u201cC1 = 200HP 2.3L Ford Cosworth E\".
