We don't have a lot of information on this Bike beyond what is provided. We know the engine was gone through and I can only assume the transmission as well but I cannot confirm that. I've uploaded the California vehicle calculator fee that shows registration for this bike will be $172.00 in California. I hope this is not too confusing but let me explain the plate you see and the current registration. What you are seeing in the photos is an original 1968 California Motorcycle Plate, not original to this bike but original in its year. California allows you to register these plates, much like a vanity plate. It is under their YOM (Year of Manufacture) program. However, the title to the plates are owned separately from the bike. We intend to transfer the plate to the buyer, assuming they want it. We also have the standard California White Plate. The bike was last registered in January of 2020 and it expired in January 2021, the year of Mr. Haith's death. The cost to pay the one year back fee and current year license to 2024 is the $172 noted in the DMV's fee calculator. The information you need to verify for yourself is included in the uploaded document if you would like. This does not include use tax if you register it in California. This whole conversation applies only to California. Registration fees in Cali are generally more expense and more complicated than other states. I hope that answers the original question. Nine times out of ten you'll get 'em on wrong. Refit the covers on the bike, have the machine on level ground, preferable on its centre stand, and tack only a tiny bit of the decal to the location you think is correct (you can determine this by viewing period manufacture ads for these bikes). Then stand back 10 feet and look to see if the horizontal elements of the graphic is level. I responded that I was. He then showed me his bike which was just around the corner. A 1968 BSA Lighting with a Cobra seat, high handlebars, sissy bar and dual trumpet mufflers. And he only wanted $600! Serendipitous! I knew nothing about motorcycles, but test rode it and sealed the deal. Rode the BSA for three years, back and forth to college and work. I felt more alive than I had ever been before. Free, adventurous and a rebel. During those three years, I replaced the clutch, headlight bulb, taillight bulb, mufflers, exhaust pipes, mirror, stator and everything else that could vibrate to death or fall off. Me with my newly purchased repair manual and a set of new Whitworth tools that Pop also bought me. Eventually sold it to move up to a 1968 HD Sportster XLH. Have owned motorcycles ever since, have ten in my possession now. My preferences have leaned toward BMW's. When I look back at the memories of that BSA, I look through rose colored glasses. But the one thing I came to realize was not so much the BSA, but Pop seeing my desire for a motorcycle. Despite his and Mom's reluctance toward me owning a motorcycle, they agreed to help this young student along my chosen path. I'll never forget them, when in that moment, they said, \"go buy a motorcycle\". To this day I recognize the love they had for me. AND... if you raced a Spitfire prior to enlisting in the Army in '61, that means yours was an A-10 (pre-unit), which is far less likely to run in the twelves than a mid-sixties version. However, it's not impossible that an old wrinkled-ass'd A-10 Spitfire would run in the twelves (in an 1/8 mile!) So here's the take away from all this...
