I\u2019ve loved cars for 50 years since I started a subscription to R&T when I was 12, have owned a bunch, but am (regretfully) not qualified to \u201cwrench\u201d on my cars (so deep engineering/ questions on this auction won\u2019t get very deep answers, unfortunately). \r\n\r\nI bought this vehicle in \u201818 on BAT and, after the auction, learned the back-story from the widow who sold it: The husband owner and his wife saw this vehicle sitting in \u201cheavily used\u201d condition on an herb farm near Glacier National Park, MT in \u201810 or \u201811.... and decided to buy it. They brought it back to VA and began a multi year, nut-and-bolt restoration. The owner was reasonably \u201ctechnical\u201d and planned to do a lot of the work himself - but ultimately needed to bring in a number of subject matter experts (to bead blast the body, do comprehensive body work, engine work, upholstery, etc.).\r\n\r\n[With the auction comes (a) a photo album with ~266 restoration progress photographs documenting all the work - along with 2 CD\u2019s and 300+ loose photographs (b) a binder with approximately 265 invoices for every service and piece of hardware purchased over the multi-year restoration (totaling ~$40,000 of his work, and (c) an additional ~$7K of work which I commissioned to sort out the clutch and transmission and (d) assorted manuals and literature.]\r\n\r\nVery sadly, near the end of the restoration, the owner was diagnosed with cancer, which mobilized friends and experts to finalize the restoration to enable the owner and his wife to take one last trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains, before his subsequent passing. \r\n\r\nThe Willy\u2019s wagon is surprisingly comfortable and quiet, runs smoothly and well, has fantastic visibility for passengers, and brings more smiles-per-mile than any other vehicle I\u2019ve ever owned. \r\n\r\nProspective buyers are encouraged and most welcome to come and inspect the vehicle: we\u2019re about 25 minutes from Portland airport. \r\n\r\nI\u2019ll do my best to respond quickly. Virtually the same rig in comparable condition but mine has 4x4. These are plain and simple fun. Overdrive makes them actually usable on modern highways regardless of whether the gearing is the optional 4.89 or standard. The weak link, as some stated previously, is the braking system. I've toyed with upgrading to modern disc, but my purist nature has held me back. I did do one non original upgrade which is highly recommended. They are bright, easy to install, and as long as you have a good ground are plug and play right behind the existing factory lenses and bezels.\r\n\r\nNOS and good repop parts support for these things is really top notch.
