We passed; AM only. For in town driving the 50+ mpg was no exaggeration.\r\n\r\nThe tank held ~ 7 gal, and the price then was 40\u00a2/gal. I\u2019d give the delivery man three bucks, once a month, to fill up, and he always brought back change.\r\n\r\nOnce, driving on the IN toll road to Chicago, in the right lane, I was passed by an 18 wheeler, doing 70. His draft began to suck the little 1300 lb box; I put it in neutral and followed him for a mile. If I had a set of balls, I could\u2019ve gotten to the Loop on a quarter\u2019s worth of gas. Alas, if he ever jammed his brakes, the car and driver\u2026would have been headless horsemen.\r\n\r\nThe only downside; it rolled on 10\u2033 tires. The fronts wore much faster that rears, and even with rotation, the small diameter didn\u2019t last long. Replacements, in the world before the Tire Rack\u00ae, were difficult to find. Our spare was a single, bias ply, wheelbarrow tire from the local feed store.\r\n\r\nIt was truly a terrific little car. You felt like an Italian with the dash mounted gearshift pointed straight at you. Changing the oil and tires myself, we had zero $ maintenance over 36 months and 20,000 miles. The may have also had slightly larger valves but it's been so long I don't remember. I think said motor belted out 55 horsepower. If you took the time to clean up the ports and a few other tweaks you might even get up to 60hp. Needs a lot of small interior and exterior trim bits, some of which may be an adventure to find, plus a thorough cleaning and mechanical baselining. As others have noted, I agree a good underside PPI or more thorough, detailed set of underside photos would be important before getting too serious about this one. But from what I see here and recall from mine, the structure is sound. It is tempting, and I like that rare somber metallic green color which gives this microcar a touch of upscale class. Tires aren't a problem these days. The engine was frozen, but it came with a working spare. At the time I couldn't do an engine swap myself. Today I'd buy it in a heart beat and do the swap over a weekend. I recall that the engine design is similar to the CB350 and CB 750 engines, which means that the timing chain has no master link, and removing the cam shaft an head is an exercise in frustration, until you figure out just how to do it - then it's easy. The engine and gearbox are in unit. Fitting anything else into the engine bay would be difficult, and don't forget, if you use a motorcycle power unit, you need to figure out a reverse gear. I'm sure somebody has done it, but don't plan on making this into a hot rod. N600s are by all accounts (and by my experience) even happier at higher revs than the smaller-engine Minis, thanks to better breathing and roller cranks. I never got to drive any 600 more than ten miles or so, but my last 850 had many thousands of miles on it when I sold it on. Long-distance driving in little cars is hard only on those with tender butts, little patience, and a need for music other than the engine's. Being kinda young helps too! Buy something more powerful and designed to be so. The suspension on these is pretty crude, with not all that much vertical front wheel travel and a solid rear axle that metes out harsh punishment for occupants riding over major bumps or potholes. It also creates occasional judder in hard cornering. I found the straight-line acceleration on mine to be perfectly acceptable, the highway cruising capability quite OK for a very small car, the dashboard shifter fun, and the handling, ride and steering definitely inferior to those of a Mini. As light as it was, I recall the car plowed a bit in corners, and that the steering was just a tad numb. Still, I loved the 600, and quickly became happy driving it and not expecting it to be a Cooper S.
