No radio, no p/s or power brakes. He needed to sell it, and nobody was buying. So one weekend he masked it off and shot it with grey primer, raised his asking price and sold it 3 days later. \r\nAnother friend had one of these about the same time and it was a 6 cylinder 3 on the tree with a bench seat. That one got turned into a Black Z/28 and sold to Japan.\r\nSimple cars that will run a long time with care. With non power drums, everyone on the road can brake better than you. It was the best modification I have made to my 67.\r\n\r\nA swap to a Saginaw 4 speed can be done for ballpark $1500-2000 if you do it yourself. Add another $1500-2000 for a 5 speed plus compatible rear gears. Buy the right parts and it\u2019s bolt in. But for this car a 200-4r automatic with O/D would suit it better, giving it a lower first gear than the powerglide for better takeoff and using o/d to keep up with highway speeds. I have never had a vintage car come into my shop with properly set up drum brakes. After a vintage car leaves my shop they stop as well as the era equivalent disc brake car. The only difference is potential fade which can be dealt with with higher quality parts. If you are able to lock up the wheels then it is only a matter of modulation. That said once you up-size the wheel and tire combo a brake up grade might be required as you have exceeded the design criteria, but in that situation a stock conversion is not adequate either. The brakes are relative to the tire and wheel combination. Yes, drums can anchor a car down from speed but i\u2019d still vote for a disc swap if much highway or higher speed travel were planned. With the power front discs I have now, the car stops more easily. Modern power disc conversions are much better than the stock power brakes from the \u201870\u2019s. You don\u2019t get the touchy light switch feel of old power brakes, just linear feel. I\u2019m seriously considering power steering now.
