I bought it brand new off the showroom floor. The base '74 came with only bare bones in the cockpit. It didn't come with a radio or even dedicated slot into which to put the radio. The bumpers on the '74 were much more in line with the style of the vehicle than the ones they added in '75 for the U.S. market. I routinely got in the high 20s for MPG (very high for a car in the mid 70s), but never got anywhere near the 50 MPG you say. \r\n\r\nOne of the best part (of many, many for that car) was the true swept windshield. Of all the cars I've had before and since with several claiming a swept windshield, that '74 X1/9 was the only one that was true to the concept, \r\n\r\nOne other interesting point was the effect at about 72 mph. At approximately that speed once attaining that speed you could back off the accelerator a bit and the car would maintain that speed. Have a look at photos 19 - 22. The aluminum bumper section is pushed back under the black plastic cover a bit more on the passenger side than on the drivers side. The bumpers are mounted on gas struts left and right and if the strut loses pressure, usually caused by hitting something, even lightly, the bumper is pushed back. This can be easily fixed by taking the bumper off, removing the passenger side strut, using a jack, etc. to force the strut back out to it's full length, tack weld it in place(make sure no gas remains in strut) where the two strut sections overlap, and reinstall it. You can also get a new or used strut on ebay or from Midwest Bayless. There is also a bracket that fastens the bumper to the strut that may be bent - you'll might have to repair or replace this. Overall not a big deal and an easy fix. This happened to my 81 X and I easily fixed it.
