The rear spoiler (integral to body, not bolted on), the USA license plate recess (not the Euro wider rectangle), and the S2 intake 'ears' are a LBC-type of modification on the S1. I saw a similar LBC Esprit restored in Huntington Beach, California, but it also had a Buick V8; this one has the original(?) 907 2.0 liter engine. I also see the very rare and hard-to-find original air box in the front trunk. If you're not a purist, this looks to be a nice Esprit project. For a 40+ year old ungalvanized chassis, this one has surprisingly minimal visible rust. This car is, per the tag on the door jamb, number 169H. So at some time it was swapped. That's a 907 original to a Federal Esprit S1; just not this particular S1. \n\nIn years past, from talking to owners and others involved with Esprits from the early days, it is my understanding that a couple of dealers in California would swap entire engines when doing major repairs - they would have an engine ready to go and would swap the new engine in for the customer and then go and rebuild the one that came out for the next car. Indeed, I have seen more than a few west coast S1s with engines from other west coast S1s. If the seller does not have service history on this car, that may have been the case here. \n\nAs an aside, due to the number of engine fires caused by the infamous plastic fuel T-connectors (and engine losses due to overheating), it is my understanding that Lotus sent at least one large shipment of 907 engines to the U.S. as warranty replacements. From time to time you will come across a S1 (and maybe an S2?) with an engine number that is coded as a 907 for a Federal Esprit but does not correspond to any known car; these are those factory replacement engines. (I have had two such S1s.) While Lotus has extensive records of every Domestic (Dom) and Rest of World (RoW) Esprit S1 and S2 made including interior options and warranty history, for the Federal cars they have limited information (chassis number, engine number, color, completion date, maybe a bit more); the warranty records and other data were maintained by the US operation and were lost when the organization folded around 1980.\n\nOne fun curiosity about this particular car -- there is (almost certainly) a hand carved typo on it. As a Federal car (which it obviously is), it should have a VIN ending with the letter H (as was Lotus's method, and as shown on the door jamb tag). The VIN number on the data plate in the front compartment is supposed to match. One this car, the data plate says 169J (77030169J); that J should be an H. (J denotes RoW cars, which this is obviously not, and I don't think there even was a 169J.) A simple mistake made by someone at the factory that has given the car an interesting VIN. You do not need to be concerned that something may have been falsified -- the carved handwriting on that data tag is very recognizable to people who have seen a lot of them. :) \n\nThis car looks like a fun project . . . Lotus Prepared by Claudius (who appears to have modified this car decades ago) makes some mechanical upgrades such as motor mounts, larger oil cooler, and 4-fan setup which are useful if you intend to put serious mileage on your S1/S2. \n\nThere are several UK vendors who provide great support for the early Esprits. SJ Sportscars has a comprehensive catalog of S1/S2 parts and reproduces most of the body and trim pieces (and has a very useful website). If the cam timing jumps more than three teeth, or if the timing belt breaks, the pistons will bend all the valves. The repair for that tiny oops gets very expensive in a heartbeat. It's extremely unwise to swim in those waters.\r\n\r\nThe trapezoidal-tooth, black timing belts were supposed to be changed every 24 months, regardless of the miles logged in that time. Even if the car sat in storage, never turning a wheel for that entire time. Time is as important as miles, and keeping up with maintenance is critical. And sitting static for that time is actually harder on the timing belt than being started & run regularly.\r\n\r\nGiven the time this car has sat as a project waiting to be restored, and the current owner not having replaced/ tensioned the timing belt, it would not be smart (doing my best to remain polite) to key the starter, or make any attempt to start & run this engine.
