I was getting really really busy with work and my girlfriend (now my wife) asked me where my car was as it wasn't in the buildings parking lot. I was convinced it was stolen as there were a string of burglaries in the building. I was bummed, I rerouted it stolen and went out a bought a used Caprice wagon. One afternoon I was leaving the truck rental place and a few blocks away I spotted my white LTD parked outside a building. I came closer to it and noticed that it still had my 'club' locked on the steering wheel. I remember I was pissed that the perp who stole my car had the audacity to use my club too! I called the cops and explained everything while I was staking out the car on the DL. I asked them to send over an unmarked cop car since I didn't want to blow my cover. It was most likely a garden variety Custom or Galaxie with a 302 or 351 and a column-mounted automatic. You can see at least one scene in the film where Reynolds stops the car and throws the gear lever into Park. \r\n\r\nWe are led to believe that the car had some hot engine with a manual transmission, via editing. We're shown a quick shot of the engine...between two shock towers in what appears to be a Mustang. We also see quick shots of Reynolds shifting a t-handle Hurst shifter between gears...with a console and other controls that look suspiciously like those in a Mustang of the era. \r\n\r\nAnd finally, Hal Needham really hurt his back doing the jump onto the moving barge. Apparently the stunt was mistimed a bit, and Needham later recollected that when he saw how far away the barge was once he cleared the dirt berm, he said to himself, \"This is gonna hurt.\"\r\n\r\nWay too much bad '70s movie trivia. I carefully examined the exterior and I am reasonably certain there is absolutely no paint work on this vehicle. The interior basically looks like I would imagine it would back in 1971. Heck, how would I know I would have been a 1 year old. The seats, are exceptionally firm and supportive and all the carpeting, vinyl, and interior amenities look like the doors were s sealed in a climate controlled time capsule since new. Numb slow-ratio power steering may have been great for Aunt Bessie to drive to church or the yarn store back in the day, with just one forefinger aiming the car down Main Street. But emergency maneuvers just weren't going to end well. \n\nTake a look at clips from an old show called \"Car and Track.\" It was basically a predecessor to MotorWeek that ran in syndication in the late 1960s and early '70s. They'd film a new car going through a slalom course, and it looked as though the edge of the front bumper was going to scrape on the pavement, there was so much body lean. This, while the skinny outside front tire looked like it was about to roll right off the rim, it was deflected so far to the side. And more physical comedy in the emergency braking maneuver. The rear end lifting in the air, at a far greater altitude than any pair of Gabriel Hi-Jackers could ever hope to achieve, while smoke billowed from the rear tires, and the front tires were hopelessly mushroomed into a mild variation of grip. This all happening with the car careening down the test track at about a 30 degree angle.\n\nHeck, you don't even have to find those old shows. You can see a young Michael Douglas arriving at the scene of a murder each week behind the wheel of the SFPD's light brown Ford on \"The Streets of San Francisco\" (a Quinn Martin production), the car bobbing like a scrawny nerd trying to avoid welts in a game of middle school dodge-ball. My jaw dropped. The owner must have just pulled it out of it's winter hibernation as it was all shiny and clean. I tried to absorb as much as I could while telling my wife, frantically, to find a parking spot quickly. I was already out the door before she put it in park. I got about halfway to the car when I realized I forgot my phone as I wanted to take some pictures, so I quickly turned around. \r\nBig mistake. \r\nJust as I grabbed my phone, I heard this thunderous roar and my heart sank. I turned around to see it leaving the parking lot. As he pulled onto the road, he punched it and that thing pulled away surprisingly quick like and then it was gone. Whatever is under the hood is all business. \r\nI noticed it had a For Sale sign in the back window when we first saw it, another reason I wanted my phone so I could take a picture of that too. \r\nAll I can remember is the year, model and the asking price... $16,000 obo !!
