There may have been couple of others but these five were tops in sales. A comparable 2.0 liter BMW may have been a wee bit quicker but these 220's could probably cruise all day long at 80+ mph. Might have taken a bit to achieve that cruising speed but once there, I suspect the 220 was far and away the most serene and capable. My experience in this chassis Benz was limited to a 220D (a '72 4 speed our dealership took in trade in SoCal). I was so impressed with that car in the summer of '74 but didn't have the $5,200 to buy it. So I marched ahead with my Datsun 510. Ironic isn't it, had I bought that 220 D then I could still be driving it! These classic Benzes, if maintained, can outlast Keith Richards!
