This is your chance to get in on the ground floor of a new trend; The lowly Pinto has become a future collectable who's time is now. Just think about it, production-wise these are very rare automobiles! There were only 178,899 Pintos built in '78. That's way down from the high-water mark of 544,209 built in 1974. It's the second lowest production year next to 1980 when only 185,054 were built. I couldn't find separate production numbers for the Shaggin' Wagon, not that I looked that hard, but I'm guessing that it was a subset of the 52,269 wagons for '78. So that makes this one a relative rarity!\r\n\r\nPrior to visiting the Mecum Auction in Monterey last month I never would have thought Pintos to be a collector car, let alone to have value on the rise for low mileage examples. But this must be so because Lot Number T-168, a dark green 1978 Pinto Squire wagon with green plaid interior, 2.3L 4-cyl engine and automatic, and only 15,739 miles on the clock topped out at $30k at that auction. With the 10% buyer's premium that meant that the price the buyer paid was a whopping $33,000.00. To say that I was shocked is an understatement. The final price left the assembled crowd literally speechless. But then again, it only takes two to make an auction. Back in the 60's and 70's, cars were ginormous, and a Pinto seemed like a small car. Fast forward to 2018, 6'1\" 225 lbs, 62 years old, and the Pinto is quite roomy to drive, and over all dimensions are not miniscule by today's standards. I've gone back in time with many of my automotive purchases to recapture various stages of my youth... chasing down cars that were particular favorites, or cars that impressed me with their purpose, their functionality, or their design. I bought a version of a '48 Plymouth Special DeLuxe Club Coupe that somewhat replicated my first one... purchased in 1971, at 15, that I drove home with only a driver's permit... it cost me 100x more than my first one. :) I've chased down other favorites...a '55 Desoto Fireflight, a '66 Beetle, a 240Z, a Bitter SC, a Pinto, and many others. Some I've kept. Some I've enjoyed for a while and sold. Some I enjoyed far less at this age than back in the day. With a nod to tires with a fresher production date, I wouldn't hesitate to drive this Pinto across the country. Seating position works better for me than the 240Z (which I sold on BAT). The interior ,while a little flashy with it's patterned, striped inserts, is bare bones. Heater, AM radio. There are not a lot of distractions. The motors are stout...often used in various performance cars. And, while I love this car for its originality, I also understand those that might want to upgrade to modern drivelines and create a sleeper with a porthole. Pintos, station wagons, survivor cars... all have become appreciated in recent years, and this car punches all three of those tickets. It is cool, in it's 70's funky, Chess King, shaggin' wagon, go back and look at your class picture back in the day kind of way. Performance was all but illegal in anything made from 1974 through 1980. Looks were everything. And the Pinto Cruising Wagon was really a pretty neat thing in the day! Custom vans were the in-thing in this period. Ford saw the opportunity to create a small market for folks who liked custom vans, but couldn't really afford to go all-out. This was a logical product addition for 1978. I wanted one of these, a TransAm, or a Dodge Lil' Red Express truck in my senior year of HS. Granted, the Pinto was no speed demon, but it was cool as hell! The Firebird and the LRE were two of the three fastest American production vehicles that year, but insurance for those was pretty high for a high school kid. The Pinto was definitely less expensive, and easy to insure without breaking the bank. Still, I was shy about getting into what would've been my first car payment, and didn't get the Pinto.\r\n\r\nI like the feature car, a lot! I can even overlook the lack of A/C. The 2.3L Pinto engine is easily updateable for more power and efficiency, and parts availability is very good. I made lots of memories in that thing, drag racing my best friend's 3-cyl Geo Metro and barely keeping up with normal traffic while doing so, developing my wrenching skills, putting a body kit on it, complete with a roof spoiler, hood/roof scoops, front/rear bumpers, side skirts, all of which made from cardboard I found laying around (took A LOT of duct tape to hold it all down at 60mph) also included a coffee can exhaust tip and a 2L soda bottle with \"NOS\" written on it taped to my rear/side window (all a gag of course) and some memories a little too personal to share (I'll give you a hint though, had much to do with the wagon style back end, fold down seats and my first girlfriend).
