She found herself in a family way after she and Jimmy Don had a little too much to drink at the bowling alley lounge after Jimmy Don\u2019s team took second place in the Fort Stockton Invitational. The thrill of victory overwhelmed the need to be careful and before long the third small mouth to feed took the shine off the silver cup on mantel atop the faux fireplace.\r\n\r\nWithin weeks of giving birth Jimmy Don was injured in a freak accident at the proving grounds where he\u2019d worked since before they were married. Serious, even as industrial accidents go, Jimmy Don was left with the inability to sit down. He could only stand erect. That\u2019s probably the wrong word; he could only stand straight. And he could lie down. Doctors told Jimmy he\u2019d never be able to sit again. It ruled out a return to work, as he\u2019d had a supervisor position, requiring he remain seated at all times.\r\n\r\nNot one to wallow, Dotty-Jean took the bull by the horns and talked herself into the Tupperware distributorship for Fort Stockton. Within a few months she had a Tupperware Party booked most every night, dragging samples and door prizes out to Jimmy Don\u2019s old Chevrolet Thrift-Master. Before long, word spread about the money people could save on groceries by being able to lock in the freshness of their leftovers, and Dotty-Jean was one of the top Tupperware distributors in the entire five county region of Southwest Texas. The old Chevy truck would no longer do. Tired of Jimmy Don standing around all the time, without even consulting him Dotty-Jean drove the Thriftmaster to the Studebaker dealer in Odessa and traded it in on a Champaign Gold over two toned brown 1963 Lark Daytona Wagonaire wagon.\r\n\r\nIt was the perfect choice. Classy enough to take her Tupperware business to the next level. A four door, so she could herd the rugrats in and out effectively. And the sliding rear portion of the roof allowed Jimmy Don to stand up in the back when they went to church or, ever increasingly, the K-Bob\u2019s for dinner.\r\n\r\nThey were quite a sight around town through most of the sixties, a kid hanging out every window, boxes of Tupperware tied to the roof rack, and Jimmy Don standing up in the back, hanging on to the cables lashing down the deliveries, squinting into the sun. It got to be that Dotty-Jean could squeeze every bit of power out of that 289 cubic inch V8 and manual three on the tree, even with her husband looking like a Roman statue behind the back seat.\r\n\r\nOf course, every silver lining has its cloud. So much time standing in the blistering wind caused Jimmy Don to develop severe eyelid problems. By \u201967 the situation necessitated him being admitted to Fort Stockton Regional Hospital and forced to undergo an emergency circumcision so doctors could then graft new eyelids in place.\r\n\r\nOverall, everything worked out fine. Dotty-Jean earned enough to put all three kids through private school at Our Lady of Immeasurable Concern. She eventually sold the Tupperware franchise and started selling time-shares out at the cabins on Lake Leon. She and Jimmy-Don celebrated their Golden Anniversary several years back. Nearly the whole town showed up at the armory for the party, several of them just for Trixie\u2019s potato salad, which she brought in Tupperware, just for old times.\r\n\r\nOnly time it got weird? The sliding roof tracks bolt right in to the fixed roof cars, and the roof panel is the same part either way. HOWEVER\u2026 the fixed roof car roof panel lacks the latching mechanism and rollers to make the panel operable. Simple solution for those that want a slider\u2026 get the tracks and the complete roof panel from a rusty slide-roof car, transfer all the gizmos to the nice brown panel, and Voila! A slide-roof car. Then you just have to find good fitting rubber seals for when you want to keep the rain out.
