The 5.6L V-8 is a monster in such a small car, they handle great, and unlike a lot of classics they're great for city and freeway driving. They were $60-$70K new in 1989 which tells you the precision and performance you're dealing with. I drove a LOT of 560sl's before settling on this car. It's been babied.\n\n\u2022\u00a0The soft top is in excellent cosmetic and working condition. I'll take some photos this weekend and post. It's brown, which was standard for this color combo.\n\n\u2022\u00a0The dash in is excellent shape (see the 6th main photo from the top). Solid black - no fading or cracks. It's clear to me from the overall condition of the interior that this car has always been garaged.\n\n\u2022 Engine is in great shape - all the original engine stickers are there (see photo). I had it inspected before I purchased it. Only thing I had replaced was the steering coupling. Other than that she passed inspection with flying colors.\n\n\u2022The car is available for test drives and mechanical inspection here in Los Angeles, just contact me through BaT. I have a hoist available too.\n\n\u2022\u00a0A few months after I bought this car, I found a 1972 280sel 4.5 sedan that I had been looking for for years. Is that a lot of the issues of the M116 (380 and 420) engine are extrapolated onto the M117 (500 and 560) engines... I.e., I've owned a 420SEL that I bought with a lunched engine and I know two other techs that have seen them fail (blows a hole in the right bank cam cover, often) ... And have done several 380SL chains/guides because the owners worried about the noise on startup, including my own. I however have NEVER actually encountered chain-related failure on a 5.0 or 5.6. Inspection of one a few months back in a 500SEC revealed broken cam oiler clips and a worn cam in need of replacement... But no appreciable stretch in the chain, all upper guides intact, and tensioner was tight. This was at 238,000.\n\nIOW, you are welcome to spend a ton of money if it makes you sleep better, but there is a degree of scare-mongering around this \"issue\" that isn't backed up by my personal experiences. This isn't a Merak V6... Mercedes' top-line V8, 20 years into its development cycle, didn't need $1500 worth of service every 50k. I have much first hand experience with 560 SL and this is a nice example .. \n\nThe sloppy steering box and old suspension is a common issue on these cars, but this one appears to have had its steering motor mounts, etc already completed. Good.\n\nAC issues? Does this blow cold.. Updated refrigerant?\n\nAs others mention, timing chain/guides should be checked.. There are MB slack tolerances for chain which can be checked with valve covers off, so might not need to be replaced, but guides can cause issues if they crack, as others mention. Timing chain should not be a deal breaker.\n\nWheels?? I think that chrome wheels are what my father would have put on his car in the 1980s...
