These are great little cars and while somewhat under-powered require nowhere near the maintenance that the 944 and 928 do. The Audi sourced engine is non-interference and the timing belt isn't paper mache like the 944 belts. They handle great and are very rewarding to a moderately skilled driver. Parts availability is good and not brutally expensive while the support from enthusiast forums is excellent. Someday (I hope soon) the humble toofah will get the respect it deserves as the water cooled pioneer Porsche. As an inexpensive way to get into P-cars there is none better IMHO. The 924 was supposed to be a VW originally and was designed to their spec so that they could use their Neckarsulm factory. The VW boss got fired mid stream on the design and Porsche bought the car back from VW to replace the 914 as theri entry level vehicle. It was sold to them on the condition that the Neckarsulm factory still be used for production. Porsche redesigned lots of bits on the car from their VW spec, but lots of the original design stayed the same too. Lots of VW and Audi bits on these cars, but also some higher dollar stuff, IE: the VW was supposed to be carburated but these use Bosch CIS fuel injection. The transmission isn't really a bug set up, it is more of a conventional Audi design installed backwards in the car. The shift pattern on these is backwards to conventional, with 1st being down and left and fifth down and all the way to the right. The original 1.8L JH engine came with 90HP. It was stroked to 2.0L but the rest of the improvements were port and polish of the entire intake/exhaust, better valve springs and a more robust camshaft. As for delicacy, these early turbos were oil-cooled (prone to overheating for the unitiated or impatient) and had a number of well-documented sealing problems. It was also gummed up by the same emissions rules that force Porsche to install an EGR valve AND an air pump for all 50 states. The later 924/944 cars were MUCH more robust. And much more capable because of the use of better-quality parts.\n\nThis particular car is a non-Porsche 4-speed, so no 915 parts. But I also don't think it's a Bug-related transmission.
