From time to time I would drop by to see what they had on their showroom floor.\r\n\r\nOne day I dropped by and on the showroom floor behind several nondescript new Biturbos was a Quattroporte III and a late 1960's (as I recall) green Ghibli. \r\n\r\nI've always liked the brutish looks of the QP III, and when they offered a test drive, I of course accepted. It had a gorgeous Italian supple leather interior, but other than that, I found the 1990 BMW 750 V12 I was driving at the time was a better car in virtually every aspect.\r\n\r\nUpon returning to the dealership, I asked about the Ghibli. \r\n\r\nThey said it was on consignment and had been sitting on the showroom floor for \"a while\", and they would call the owner and ask if he was OK with my taking it for a test drive.\r\n\r\nThey came back and said the owner was fine with my test driving it, but with the request that I give it \"an Italian tuneup\". When I asked what \"an Italian tuneup\" was, they said, \"just rev it to redline a few times under load and blow it out\".\r\n\r\nI took it out on an empty just-opened stretch of I-795, and on a long straight,\"as requested\" I ran it up to about 100MPH or so for a mile or two. \r\n\r\nI've never forget the contented hum of the engine and the effortless ease with which it cruised at 100 MPH. I could only imagine how much fun it must have been in Italy on an Autostrada to cruise at length (dodging Fiats of course) at 100+ MPH.\r\n\r\nAs I recall the owner was asking $60,000, which I thought was a little steep at the time (mid 1990's), and I passed.\r\n\r\nMy current 2014 QP GTS that I bought on BaT in March with 523 HP will outperform the Ghibli in every respect except perhaps the most important aspect: the soul-satisfying aspect of just looking at the Ghibli and admiring it's classic lines before Italian designers went apeshit with angles and planes trying to mimic stealth-fighter airplanes.\r\n \r\nWhat a magnificent motorcar!\r\n\r\nWhoever gets this Ghibli should have a smile on his face a mile wide. Boiled down, it seemed to be a conversation about how much time you wanted to spend in an Italian exotic car- if it was an hour, the Miura, if it was three hours, the Daytona, and if it was a weekend, the Ghibli. All of them are strikingly beautiful cars with formidable performance, but the Ghibli is probably the most usable and the easiest to live with. They have always been undervalued with respect to the Daytonas, which is one of those existential puzzles not yet figured out. \r\n\r\nIn 2003, Giorgio Giugiaro was the judge at Pebble Beach for the class of Giugiaro designs. A Ghibli won the best-in-class award, and Giugiaro admitted that it was his favorite of his designs. It's easy to see why. The car has astonishing grace and class, and looks like it's driving at top speed, standing still. \r\n\r\nI think the colors chosen for this car are perfect- elegant, restrained, and tasteful. Ghiblis look at least good in any color, but this one is over-the-top beautiful. \r\n\r\nIt's said that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. Whatever your preference is in the three-way competition mentioned above, it's impossible to argue with the Ghibli being very much a thing of beauty; the relatively few ever built will continue to delight their owners and viewers always. There are very very few automobiles that combine usefulness, beauty and performance as the Ghibli does.
