I bought it from the original owner, who stored it in 1987 after a valve leak. The motor was totally locked up after sitting 30 years with coolant in it, so it needed a full rebuild. After a slight overbore to correct the scoring, custom pistons fitted, rebuilt turbo, etc, the rebuild went. Then a couple door dings and a rust spot meant the whole body was stripped, fixed, and repainted. Lots of other little items along the way as well as you can imagine. Its been two years, I'm about $20k just into the work on the car, not to mention the car itself. I can't count how many times I was told to cut bait, I was too deep, it was a lost cause, who cares about these strange cars, etc.\r\n\r\nYesterday I drove it around town over to my storage shop. The turbo sucked up the cold dense air and the car drove great. Everyone who told me to quit on this car can toss off. It is historic, it is pretty, it is fun. If you dare call yourself a Saab person, even a car person in general, then you need to respect this car.\r\n\r\nSeller is already regretting this I'm sure, but the buyer never will. It\u2019s a 1984 99 GL that\u2019s been upgraded to SPG/aero spec with the skirts and a late 2.1 L 16v motor, with full pressure turbo. Runs like a scalded cat. Look for me at radwood next year. It was parked in knee-high grass, but it started right up and ran well enough for the two-mile drive back to my grandfather's shop, where I had very high hopes of making it right as post-divorce therapy. Reality can be a real letdown. The turbo shaft had a lot of slop and the turbine blades were ground down from rubbing the housing. A big chunk of a synchronizer came out with the transmission oil. The interior was so, so filthy. I sank all my spare money into it and got it to the point where it was mostly sorted mechanically and what today passes for \"patina.\" Sold it for $1,500, so I made back about half of what I sank into it in new parts. Then I heard it went through a couple of more ownership changes with a blown engine before it went back to the motherland. They were dropped on their roof from 6' up to test structural integrity. The comments about engine placement and why are just looking for something to complain about since it's different. I lost a belt on my 99 once and made it home because the water pump is internally driven. This car has no electronic injection, no power steering, no power windows, no abs, (I guess the brake as vacuum assisted but....so what) no automatic anything. And that is an exceptionally nice list to NOT have. The front seat recover on this is close but not exact yet it maintained the original look just enough to not lose the great design feeling of that interior. I don't see evidence of sin where the LF suspension mounts up, although the sheet metal under the transmission has been, ahh, rearranged a bit. Also I appreciate the forthrightness of the listing with regard to rust but also don't see anything worrying in the sills, suspension mounts, etc. One correction to an earlier post - these do have electronic ignition (the black box on the right fender well). Don't forget to check the transmission oil periodically as it sometimes likes to leak a bit as well. Being a 5-speed this car has a trans oil dipstick which makes it easy - the original issue 4-speeds only had a level plug which requires two straight extensions and a wobble extension to remove (which then allows you to rustproof the crossmember below it since you really can't the level until oil starts pouring out). Am I the only one who remembers those as being horrible tires, fast wearing, noisy, not much grip after the first few miles, etc.? The only correct size tire that I know of today is the Vredestein Sprint Classic. Luckily the 99 Turbo is pretty happy with 195-60x15s (and the radius is within a couple of percent of the original) and there are lots of choices there. Some have gone wider, but things start to rub and I'm not sure how much real benefit one gets. Just 2 cents! I've got 195 Continentals on mine right now and have been happy with those. An original front air dam is hard to find these days, but I think there are some fiberglass reproductions floating around. Working on a car lot growing up the first turbo charged car I ever drove was the Corvair. However back then there was no such (not that we were aware of anyway) thing as turbo timers and by and large the public wasn't educated about letting your car idle a bit before shutting it down, so the turbos never worked on a three year old used car. So the Saab Turbo was the first car in which I found out how fun a turbo equipped car could be, the first time I sat in a car with heated seats. Two really cool options for a young car fanatic. I owned a light green '78 or '79 around 1983 and I loved the feel of the turbo so much in fact, that it dropped a valve seat in the first thirty days of ownership. Within another thirty days I lost a pressure plate and when my wife found out the price of removing the engine to replace the clutch assembly we bid it adieu post haste. I loved to own this one to see how it has aged with time. I'd have to try to be a little more judicious with the throttle this time around, but I'm betting it would still be hard to ignore the wonderfully steep power curve. I tried to think of the last time I saw one in real life and realize they disappeared from daily life almost overnight. I'm not sure if they were put away in private garages or public wrecking yards.
