It certainly deserved it. \r\n\r\nWhen I first came across that verse by \"Joaquin\" (real name Cincinnatus), the author was listed as unknown. A reference to it having been found in an old bed roll and what can best be described as a collection of stashed items for \"gettin' outta town.\" Only much later did I learn of the true author. He was quite an American character! A member of thee Savage Club in London and the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. I'm a great lover of American lit combined with history and spent my first two years at college as an English major. Lots of J.F. Cooper and the like in my youth. The part of NE Ohio I'm from, the \"Western Reserve,\" was settled by soldiers of the American revolution who got land grants for their service. The place looks more like New England than the wild West (which it was in 1799). Plenty of homes and buildings still standing from that time. Lots of Indian lore and ancient Indian burial mounds there. Also, you may be familiar with the American painting \"The Spirit of '76\" by Archibald Willard (see link below). Willard lived in my hometown of Aurora and his cottage is still standing, having been preserved. Long after he left to enjoy his fame as a painter, folks found that he had used the back of an interior door to do the preliminary layout of his famous painting.
