There were problems with the evaporator cores leaking, which meant the dash had to be removed for access. The black O-rings also caused many a problem. However, with dye and a black light you could diagnose those leaks easily. The slow leaks, over a period of a month or so was usually traced to the FX-15 compressor front seal leaking. The problem was compounded if the vehicle was not run regularly with the A/C system cycling on. Problem was that the front compressor seals would dry out from lack of lubrication. It was a problem with virtually all Ford A/C systems across the entire Ford Lincoln Mercury line up of cars and trucks.\r\n\r\nThis example looks to be in excellent condition. The engines are bullet proof, the SHO is a very comfortable town and highway cruiser. The evaporator, condenser, compressor, and all accompanying hoses and cooling fans were of the same size as for the 4 door sedans. Even though the wagons had much more interior room to cool, plus way more glass area to allow sunlight and the corresponding increase of ambient temperature.\r\nAnd sorry to say, $1500 in the early 90's was about right.\r\n\r\nHere's a typical example of a/c failures we dealt with. A FX-15 or FS-6 compressor has a catastrophic failure causing the compressor innards to shell out (disintegrate) which flooded the entire a/c system with metal contaminants. Under warranty, Ford repair procedures instructed us to flush the metal from the evaporator, condenser, and all lines. We would flush the system per warranty shop instructions, replace the compressor, the fixed orifice, add PAG oil, evacuate and recharge the system to spec. The problem was that initially the a/c system worked to spec. But it was virtually impossible to remove all the metal that had flushed thru the a/c system. Meaning that shortly after returning the car to the customer, the remaining metal in the system that the flush wouldn't remove would then cause the new compressor to fail. And the vehicle would return for additional repairs.\r\nAnd no one was happy. The customer was upset, the service manager was upset, and the mechanic was really upset. Eventually, after Ford had done an analysis of warranty claims and realized that the flush procedures was not effective, we were instructed to replace most if not all of the a/c system. The most memorable was one rainy day when I was ripping down the interstate at what I considered a very safe 85 mph, despite the relative downpour. A State Trooper stepped into my lane and held out his hand. Yes, he walked onto the interstate in pouring rain, stepped in front of a vehicle moving 85 mph and flagged me to stop. Of course, I did, and he then proceeded to ream me over being \"unsafe\" in these conditions. I am not an idiot, so I just took the verbal beating. Bought the first 89 new for $21,400 drive out. We put 330k miles on it. The transmission blew the differential at 140k. Don\u2019t do one wheel burnouts with it. Did 3 or 4 clutches in it, but the motor never gave any problems. Timing belts, Motorcraft plugs and wires, a few motor mounts, valve adjustments, a crank sensor died on the way to Louisiana once. But the basic engine block and heads were OEM. Got a second 89 so we didn\u2019t have to share one. The 90 was a good deal but it was black on black, not a good thing in Houston 9 months of summer, so we sold it. Currently have an 89 that has been a 24hr of Lemons, Champcar, WRL, SCCA race car. We won twice in Lemons, had a few seconds and thirds in the other series. Treat the engine like a motorcycle one, keep the revs up, all the power and torque is above 4K rpm. This was end of model year with the new body style coming out. The dealers around Atlanta had dozens of these sitting on their lots with Ford giving out huge incentives. Over a period of 14 years I did the Konis and eibach springs, the '93 front hub with '96 brakes, 77 mm mass air sensor, extrude honed intake, stage 1 shoshop cams with valve springs, underdrive pulleys(for that 8500 redline), a variety of different exhaust systems, quaiffe limited slip diff with a clutch and throw out bearing from some company in Canada. The sales guy thought I was nuts. What he didn't know was that the car was still under Ford ESP and I was a certified Ford Lincoln-Mercury service advisor. So I drove the car next door to the Lincoln-Mercury dealer I worked at and put my best tech on it. We fixed all the mechanical issues, put on a new set of tires, and did a 60k-mile service to it. Then a month later, my Dad and I drove it to the 1995 SHO convention in Dearborn. One of the trip's highlights was waking up on I-95 with my Dad going 1xx mph and asking me, \"What will this thing do?\" I asked him why? He stated that \" the black BMW and black Mercedes in front of us couldn't leave this Ford for the last 100 miles, don't matter how hard they tried.\" When we got closer to them, it was a M5 and 500E. I was proud as my $2500 investment ran with those $80K German sedans. All the SHO fans at the convention were upset when Ford revealed the new for 1996 Taurus SHO. It was downhill from there with the problem-prone V8. Some of the original clutches didn't make it to 10k miles. The upgraded shifter is a must-do as it improves the driving experience. \nUpgrading the brakes to the 1994 brakes is a great cost-effective upgrade and allows you to keep the 15\" wheels. If the shifter is rod and linkage operated, it has been updated, if it is cable it has not.
